Students get artistic at UT crafting camp

Over the course of a week, boys and girls attending the University of Tennessee KidsU Cool Crafts camp spent time foraging for items to create fun and functional art.

The campers, led by local artist Holly Milner-Boos, took walking field trips around the UT Art Building searching for items to repurpose and inspiration for their one-of-a-kind designs.

Once the rising fourth-sixth grade students returned to the classroom, they sketched out their ideas and planned to transform common and often throwaway materials into attractive crafts. Their projects included handmade books, stamped and dyed T-shirts, wax color paintings, sculptures and texture rubbings. Here are the details on a few of them.

Wall Hanging

Taylor Repine, 13, set out to create a sculpture using found objects. “We sketched the idea first, then found materials and tried to put them together as best we could,” explains Repine. She found the perfect branch to hang cotton balls using wire and twine. Repine decided to cover the cotton balls using scraps of fabric and suspended them from the branch to create a colorful design.

Natural tie-dye

Students also brought in old cotton T-shirts to dye. Milner-Boos showed them how to use different spices, tea and even onion skins to create natural dyes at home.

To prepare the fabric for the dye, the students first soaked them in an aluminum cooking pot filled with a solution of one part vinegar and four parts water for an hour. They then wrung out the fabric.

For a tie-dyed effect, they rolled up the T-shirt vertically or horizontally and then tied with lengths of cotton at regular intervals to create a pattern.

One-fourth cup of turmeric was added to a large aluminum pot filled with water to create a deep yellow dye. After an hour, the T-shirts were submerged into the dye and left overnight.

Simple ceramics

Ten-year-old Angela Parisi created small clay tiles out of Model Magic clay for her sculpture project. She used common household tools and patterned tiles to add texture and decoration to her clay creations. The clay does not need to be fired in a kiln, so it was left to air dry 24 hours. It was clear from the beginning that a trip to a salon was out of the question for Jacquil Leathers’ younger sister Jessica. She couldn’t stand to have her head touched, and when Leathers raised her hair scissors, Jessica ran and hid.
