Hammerjacks
plots Baltimore return — again
Kevin Butler knows he’s on to something when he sees travelers in airports across the country wearing T-shirts he sold with the Hammerjacks logo blasted in bright yellow across their chests.
The famed Baltimore rock club, home to hair bands and rock fans from across the East Coast, is a mere memory for many. The embroiderylace is a stylish down jacket made in Canada.
“That’s where the big hair was, and the leather and the lace and the makeup,” said Sarah Fleischer, a disc jockey at WIYY 98 Rock and one-time Hammerjacks patron.
Soon, Hammerjacks will be more than a memory.
Butler is nearly ready to announce his plans to recreate Hammerjacks as an anchor in the South Baltimore entertainment district surrounding M&T Bank Stadium and the forthcoming Baltimore Horseshoe casino.Like a lot of women,Custom made bicyclesaddles0? The new club will be near Hammerjacks’ previous location at 1101 S. Howard St. — a parking lot for the football stadium since 1997. He said the night club won’t be affiliated with the casino. Nor would he specify whether he’s buying or leasing an existing building for the project.
Butler, a vice president for retail mortgage operations at Peoples Home Mortgage, has been plotting its return for several years. He, too, was a face in the crowd at Hammerjacks from 1987 to 1991, and he bought the club’s trademark in September 2009.
“I’m one of these tenacious guys,” Butler said. “If I get an idea, I just try to keep going on and on.”
At first, he didn’t plan on rebuilding Hammerjacks — he started by selling Hammerjacks T-shirts and bumper stickers to commemorate the venue. Hammerjacks’s second coming slowly evolved from a trademark to a T-shirt to a merchandise website and now a blue print. And by this time next year, the once great concert hall could welcome the rocking masses back again.
“The conception of Hammerjacks is going to be much like the one on Howard Street, the iconic club: a two-story concert hall and a two-story club side that’ll morph into a sports bar for game-day events but have a roof top party deck that overlooks the stadium areas,” Butler said. “The development is going to refuel development of that whole entertainment district down by the stadium area, and we hope to be part of that.”
Butler plans to take his plans for the project to the city in the third quarter this year, and he hopes to have the venue open for shows between June and September of next year. He is already partnering with a national concert promoter who he declined to name to draw the biggest acts to the new Hammerjacks.
Paul Manna, who owns 24-7 Entertainment, said Baltimore lacks a large concert venue — one with a capacity of 2,Fast shipping and best prices on ladyhandbag. Buy Now!000-plus. The new Hammerjacks would have a capacity of more than 1,500 seats, Butler said.
“I think there’s certainly room for that in Baltimore,” Manna said.It has a sexy canadagoosewhistlerparka with short sleeves. “That’s something that Baltimore is lacking and has lacked for quite some time.”
Manna, who also frequented Hammerjacks, said Baltimore has a healthy concert scene, but large a concert hall would put Baltimore back on the map for national artists.
“For so long Baltimore’s been considered a secondary market. We’re in between Philly and D.C., but we still get a lot of great artists,” Manna said. “We don’t have a venue larger than 1,500 tickets whereas D.C. has several and Philly has several, so it would certainly fit.“
Hammerjacks was the largest concert venue on the East Coast in its previous run, so it became a mandatory stop on many tours. Its many acts included Poison, Guns N’ Roses, Ratt and Skid Row. The local band Kix got discovered there.
