My family purchased a new pair of shoes for me only when I
outgrew my old ones. I was glad to go to the Red Goose Store on the west side of
the square in Tyler to buy the new shoes. The sign hanging in the front window
of the store featured a pair of boy’s high-top white shoes. Across the top of
the sign were the words, “Action Shoes For Boys And Girls.” A line of copy
across the bottom said, “They’re Half The Fun Of Having Feet.”
Buying the shoes was a double treat. First, Mama and I had to make a trip from Chandler to downtown Tyler in our old red truck. Then, the greatest enjoyment came from our visit to the Red Goose Store itself.
The children’s section was located on the right side of the store, filled with new and unusual shoes on display. But upon entering the store, my eyes transfixed on the strange futuristic machine prominently displayed in the center. Just knowing I would soon use this contraption prompted me to pick a pair quickly. Even though there was a sign that said, “There’s A Fit For Every Foot And A Price For Every Purse,” I knew to pick a cheaper pair.
After putting on the shoes, I hurriedly ran to this fantastic contraption, stepped up to a platform, and inserted my feet into two slots. This amazing machine was the store’s fluoroscope for kids, an actual x-ray machine mounted in a cabinet. Its purpose was to show how my feet fit within my new shoes. It cast a pale green glow that allowed me to see my feet and toe bones inside the shoes.
