Vegetarian Shoe Company Targets Jains

The health benefits of other aspects of a strict vegetarian lifestyle, such as leather-free shoes, are yet to be tested however.

But an enterprising shoe designer is hoping that India’s mostly vegetarian diet will translate into a demand for animal-free footwear.

“If one believes in following a vegetarian diet, why not follow it in what you wear?” said Ritu (who goes by only one name) one of the two promoters behind Mumbai-based Senso Vegetarian Shoes.

The company’s branding says it promotes a “vegetarian lifestyle from head to toe.”

A large number of people in India are vegetarians for religious reasons. Hindus do not eat beef,Find great deals on hotmkbags for businesssuit in Women's Clothing, Handbags and Purses. believing the cow to be sacred, and Muslims shun pork out of a belief it is unclean.

Many forego meat, fish and eggs altogether and some are vegetarian on certain days of the week as part of their religious observance.

But it is rare, especially in urban areas, to find practicing vegetarians who refuse to wear or use leather products. Although some Jain temples forbid leather on their premises and Hindus generally do not get involved with the manufacture of leather goods.

Ms Ritu, a strict vegetarian and an animal lover, sensed a gap in the market and started Senso a year back with her first store in opening in Mulund,With the Bari Jay collection you'll be able to wear your monclerjackets again! Mumbai, in September. The location is strategic – it’s populated with followers of the Jain religion who are normally strict vegetarians. The company in May opened its second store in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar suburb, another area popular with Jains. The shoes are also selling through two other retailers in the city.

The company, which initially started by selling men’s formal shoes, has now branched into women’s footwear, casual shoes for men and accessories such as handbags.

“Leather is branded as a style statement but animal lovers have to recognize that a creature has died to make that product,” Ms. Ritu said.

Shoes made of other materials and marketed as all-weather footwear may have leather linings, said Ms Ritu, 27.

Senso shoes are made of polyurethane, a degradable polymer and manufactured in Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand.

The company also wants to promote animal welfare and in March received recognition from People for Ethical Treatment of Animals when it was awarded the Best Vegan Company for shoes.

Bijoun Mepani, a dental surgeon, bought a pair of the shoes a couple of months ago.

“I’m a vegetarian but I don’t do anything out of the way for promoting it. But I was attracted by the concept and walked in the store,” he told India Real Time.Purchase formaldressesevening online, stay updated on team riders, latest news and events.

If given a choice, Mr. Mepani would prefer to pick up a “vegetarian” shoe rather than buying something where a creature’s life is at stake, he said.

The dentist is satisfied with the product and said the shoes were comfortable, stylish enough and also affordable.

“It is a new concept and time will tell how far it goes to creating a brand,” he said.
