hr2, Holt Renfrew’s new discount store, lacks great finds: Stealth Shopper

It is a major schlep to get to hr2, the premium off-price offshoot of high-end Holt Renfrew at Vaughan Mills shopping centre. I take the free shuttle from Union Station, which leaves twice daily at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. May through September and on Black Friday.

Hr2 is located in the former Last Call, final resting place of items that didn’t sell at Holt Renfrew locations. Its press release says hr2 offers 150 “leading brands and on-trend styles at irresistible prices.”

There is womenswear, menswear, accessories, footwear and jewelry. In the sprawling purse department,Gucci handbags prides itself in always maintaining a design edge along with guccihandbags0 on sale from cheap Gucci handbags outlet. I spot a sassy Kate Spade nylon bag ($108, down from $248) bearing the Dorothy Parker quotation “The cure for boredom is curiosity; there is no cure for curiosity.”

I am curious as to the whereabouts of the high-end designer bags. There are Kooba, orYANY, Dooney & Bourke and Marc Jacobs brands, but only two bags are in lockdown: an orange Mulberry for $479 and a brown Burberry for $725.

An unrepentant shoe slut, I am underwhelmed. I spy Sam Edelman, Cole Haan, Splendid, Rachel Zoe, Dolce Vita, Vince Camuto, Uggs,Light up a room in this coachhandbags evening gown. House of Harlow and Hunter brands. I might as well be in Town Shoes.

Navigating the clothing racks — which include Max Mara,Shop the latest backpackfactory on the world's largest fashion . Michael Kors, Tahari, Nicole Miller, Diane Von Furstenburg and a sprinkling of Armani’s Collezioni line — I have a brief flirtation with an Alice & Olivia sequined olive cocktail dress ($278 from $495) but nothing jumps up and wraps itself around my neck. Clearly, Two Ladies Who Lunch are having better luck. Their arms loaded with clothing, one enthuses “It’s not last-season stuff.”

Sizing runs from XS to XL, with lots of XS.

The men’s department at the back is compact in relation to the women’s but is well stocked with labels including Ted Baker London, Ralph Lauren and PRPS, a luxury denim line with a sense of quirkiness. I find a cool pair of Andrew Marc men’s boots in grey or brown canvas available up to size 13 priced at a reasonable $76.

The men’s sunglass selection is better than women’s: Fendi, D&G,Professional Replica Watches UK online shop. We provide hermesbelt, Replica Rolex watches for you. Persol. An impossibly handsome youth tries on a pair of Ray Ban aviators. “You look like a bug,” his girlfriend says. No sale.

Killer soundtrack notwithstanding — Mumford & Sons, Of Monsters and Men — hr2 is rather a lacklustre experience. It doesn’t need to be messy with clothing on the floor,2013 Collection germanmilitaria 1672 Styles. but it should be a treasure hunt like pig to truffle; there should be an eureka moment when you bag that pair of Gucci pinstriped pants at a fraction of the price at Holt’s downtown.

I venture into the well-lit and ventilated fitting room to try on an orange snakeskin Equipment shirt, but it looked better on the snake.

I cash out with a small, woolly Pendleton cross-body bag for $57, down from $95.

By that point, the Lunch Ladies were shopping empty-handed.

Actresses including Jessica Chastain, Rooney Mara, Hailee Steinfeld and Mad Men's Linda Cardellini were just a smattering of big and small screen stars who supported the people who dress them. Some sported looks that perfectly fit in with the evening's slightly off-beat, low-key modern elegance (Greta Gerwig in a crisp, white pantsuit and Chastain in a plain Givenchy cocktail sheath, included). While others went against the sophisticated, minimalist dress code that seems to have become standard at these things (Sofia Vergara's emerald green bombshell gown and big, glitzy Lorraine Schwartz jewels, for one).

But regardless of who rocked the night's "fashion" dress code best, designers both majorly established and those just now on their way took home top prizes. A bit of an upset occurred in the womenswear department, where Proenza Schouler snagged honors away from the more boldfaced Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs, respectively. And the new Balenciaga frontman got shut out in the accessory design category, too — losing to Phillip Lim, whose bags aren't quite yet as easily recognizable as the more mass (but equally as expensive) slouchy leather designs from Wang's studio.
