'First Look': First News for May 22

Looks like Andy Vidak is headed to Sacramento. The Hanford Republican won Tuesday's special election to the 16th Senate District seat left vacant by Bakersfield Democrat Michael Rubio. Vidak captured 51.9 percent of the vote to Leticia Perez's 41.7 percent. Other challengers, Paulina Miranda, Francisco Ramirez, and Mohammed Arif got a combined 6.2% of the vote.

Investigators have new information in the deputy-related beating death of a Bakersfield man. The security video and a limited number of Silva's medical records were ultimately released to investigators late last week. But first a hearing was held on Friday before Kern County Superior Court Judge Thomas Clark to determine whether it was appropriate to release Silva's medical records, and if so, to what extent. Records indicate 33-year old David Silva came to Kern Medical Center the night of May 8th asking directions. Later, a security officer found Silva sleeping on a lawn on hospital grounds. He was told he couldn't sleep there and was asked to leave. It was here he would be confronted by several sheriff's deputies and CHP officers, some wielding batons. Silva died at KMC an hour after the incident.

NEW AIS CANCER CENTER: The new AIS Cancer Center in downtown Bakersfield is finally opening for business. San Joaquin Community Hospital officials held an official ribbon cutting ceremony yesterday morning. Two months ago, it was announced the opening would have to be postponed because of licensing problems, construction delays and the need for more training by staff using the center's sophisticated equipment.

HEALTH CAUTION: Air pollution officials have issued a health caution for blowing dust effective Tuesday night through Wednesday. The warning applies to the Kern County valley, as well as San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Tulare, Kings and Fresno counties. Valley air district officials say winds could cause areas of dust that could lead to unhealthy amounts of particulate matter 10 microns or smaller. Exposure could trigger asthma attacks and bronchitis, aggravate lung disease, and increase the risk of respiratory infections. Officials advise people with heart and lung problems to follow their physicians' advice for weathering the conditions, and caution children and the elderly to avoid prolonged exposure or heavy exertion.

ROBBERY AND HOMICIDE ARREST: 18-year-old Theron Ausbie was arrested for robbery and homicide. His roommate, 45-year-old Kelly Gill, was found dead Monday night inside a home in the 2300 block of Castro Lane. Gill had been reported missing earlier this week. His body was found hidden inside the house.

MISSING BOY: An 11-year-old Bakersfield boy is missing and considered at risk. Jonathan Andresen (an-DREE-son) was last seen Monday afternoon just before 3 p.m. at Munsey Elementary School. His home is on nearby Apache Avenue. Jonathan has brown hair, brown eyes, wears glasses and has a broken front tooth. He was last seen wearing a red shirt. Anyone with information is asked to call authorities. Hanford cherry farmer Andy Vidak has won the 16th Senate District race, beating out a field of four other candidates. The Republican captured 51.9 percent of the vote with all precincts reporting, according to California Secretary of State returns early Wednesday morning. He beat out Democrat Leticia Perez of Bakersfield, who had 41.Custom made mandarindress?7 percent of the votes as of Wednesday morning. Early this morning, Perez posted this message on Facebook: "I am humbled and honored that so many people encouraged and supported me during the campaign with their time, energy and dedication. PASSENGER IN BIG-RIG CRASH IDENTIFIED: The big-rig passenger who died Monday after the vehicle plunged over a railing and into a canal has been identified as Wisconsin resident Keith Michael Zeamer. PEOPLE WORLDWIDE WATCH SILVA CASE: Californian columnist Jamie Butow writes that there's no denying that the David Silva case is being followed worldwide, but now there's a new social media element: an online petition calling for "immediate dismissal and prosecution of officers involved in the death of David Silva, harassment of witnesses, and illegal seizure of video recordings pertaining to the event." Launched on Change.org last week by Michigan resident Stephanie Lada, the petition had garnered 443 signatures as of Monday afternoon. Read the full story here.

POLICE SEARCHING FOR RUNAWAY JUVENILE: Bakersfield police are asking for the public's help finding a runaway juvenile considered at risk because of her age. Gabrielle Bensusen is described as 12 years old, 4 feet 11 inches tall, 80 pounds, with blond hair and blue eyes. She was last seen 5:30 p.m. Monday in the 12100 block of Marigold Drive.
