Investigators have new information in the deputy-related beating death of a Bakersfield man. The security video and a limited number of Silva's medical records were ultimately released to investigators late last week. But first a hearing was held on Friday before Kern County Superior Court Judge Thomas Clark to determine whether it was appropriate to release Silva's medical records, and if so, to what extent. Records indicate 33-year old David Silva came to Kern Medical Center the night of May 8th asking directions. Later, a security officer found Silva sleeping on a lawn on hospital grounds. He was told he couldn't sleep there and was asked to leave. Apparently, Silva left the hospital grounds and lay down again near the corner of Flower Street and Palm Drive directly across the street. We provide you the most beautiful gowns, such as cheap 100%Silk Dresses and germanww2uniforms and so on. Officials advise people with heart and lung problems to follow their physicians' advice for weathering the conditions, and caution children and the elderly to avoid prolonged exposure or heavy exertion.

Having Fun on the Cheap

It's reached that point in the week where we've all finally come to terms with being back at work.Custom made cheapreplicawatches? Tonight,Welcome to wholesalebeads online, we supply most popular and valuable wholesale products. instead of crawling home towards our sofas, the comfort of TV and endless calories, the hankering for alcohol begins. Unfortunately for those of us with limited funds it means that fun is pretty much off limits. After extensive research, of sorts, I've come up with some budget friendly solutions to having a good time. (I wanted to include a wink here but this isn't a creepy post, I promise, and a wink would just send the wrong message.)

First of all, the fashion industry gets it, you'd think they wouldn't but somehow they understand the blight of the underpaid and have made oversized handbags fashionable. Be your 18 year old self again and fill your water bottle with vodka and hide it beneath the layers of 'essentials' in your giant bag and then waltz on down to the bar like it's the 90s. Or 80s... or 70s... or 60s... or 50s, no, wait, how old would that make you...? Yeah okay, 50s and 40s, I'd hate to exclude anyone. A lemonade or coke may still set you back $2 but if you're really committing to reliving your youth you'll drink that warm soapy liquid straight from the bottle. So, that's tonight sorted, well, for those of you who own a giant handbag.

Another way to enjoy yourself without spending money is eating at someone else's house - it's free and you don't have to do the washing up. Be careful though, when people realise you aren't reciprocating their invitations, friendships and invites will dwindle. Bring a bottle of wine you stole from work, everyone is happier with alcohol in them, well most people are. Otherwise you could always pull a sickie on your own dinner party; no one wants to eat food cooked by an infectious person.

Once your local pub and your friends have caught on to your freeloading you're going to have to find another way to be entertained. Try making friends with your neighbours, I know it's unheard of in London but next time they have a party you're likely to get an invite, unless you've borrowed and not returned half their household appliances. This brings me nicely on to, house parties.2013 Collection germanarmyuniforms 1672 Styles.

When the weekend comes around and your neighbours have escaped to the countryside, the 'going out out' predicament arises. Actually, this may arise mid-week for you but I don't care for mid-week fun so, you're on your own there. Clubs are expensive; thankfully I am old enough (I think) to say I'm too old to go to clubs, although I've been using this excuse since I turned 23. If you haven't alienated every single one of your friends by eating all their food then try and get invited to house parties. House parties are the best form of cheap entertainment. You don't have to pay $5 to put your coat away - throw it on someone's bed. You don't have to pay on the door - bring a cheap bottle of cider to gain entry. You don't have to pay for drinks, everyone brings so much booze they forget what is theirs and so you can help yourself. And, if you can't afford a taxi home, passing out is completely acceptable.Find complete details about halterweddingdresses.

By the end of all of this, you probably won't have any friends left. You haven't paid for dinner in months, they know that you 'borrowed' their toaster and they're embarrassed when you throw up at the bar because you've been drinking neat spirits like a fresher. At this point I recommend joining a library and taking up reading. That or learn to make handmade sorry cards, because,Well-known brand of skateboard shoes bankcycling Posted Wino. let's face it, who can afford cards anymore?

See, it's not at all hard to have fun when you don't have a lot of money. I have no idea what people complain about.

Wings' injured Darren Helm aches to return but suffers setback

Think of how good the Red Wings might be right now with forward Darren Helm in the lineup.

Helm was expected to be the Red Wings' third-line center before injuring his back in the weight room just before training camp began in January this lockout-shortened season.

No one could have guessed then that the injury would limit him to just one game this season. Watching his teammates now in the playoffs isn't easy.

"The team is doing so great, it's the playoffs, and I want to be out there," said Helm, who was skating lightly during the Anaheim series before another setback occurred. "It's extremely tough to watch.welcome to our new store castellicycling."

The plan now is for Helm to stay off the ice indefinitely.

"Something happened (skating during the Anaheim series) and it hurt a lot and I was limping around for a couple of days," Helm said. "We decided to take a step back and we needed a different approach — staying off the ice a lot longer.

Helm said "absolutely" it was a setback in his recovery. "It wasn't a step forward, that's for sure."

Surgery isn't an option at this point, said Helm, as doctors haven't pinpointed the root cause of the problem.

So as the playoffs progress, Helm simply watches in the locker room with the Red Wings other scratches and cheers his teammates on.welcome to our new store castellicycling.

"I've settled down a little bit, being able to watch now and not be too upset," Helm said.Latest collection of women's guccihandbags and totes. "When things get a little rough and guys are getting cheap-shot is when I really get upset and I want to be out there."

What a difference this second-round series has been compared to the opening round against Anaheim. Playing the Ducks, the Red Wings were forced to travel three times to the West Coast in what turned out to be a seven-game series. And the teams played every other day.

Not so against Chicago. The teams have had two days off between Games 1 and 2 and this week in Games 3 and 4.

The rest — and shorter distance between cities — has been nice, but coach Mike Babcock would have liked a game Wednesday.

"I like playing every other day because I don't like to practice during the playoffs," said Babcock,Jovani designer backpackfactory and celebrity style evening gowns. who kept Wednesday's practice under 45 minutes. "I like a pre-game skate and let's go."

Keeping the Blackhawks in check and not letting them use their speed is something the Red Wings want to do in Game 4. The Red Wings feel it's not to their benefit at all if Chicago is skating freely up and down the ice.

"We talked about that (at Wednesday's practice), about getting your legs going because they are a fast team," forward Joakim Andersson said. "We have to get in their way and not let them get to speed.

"Their speed is something we have to be aware of."

Just because the last two games have been dictated by the Red Wings doesn't mean Game 4 will be.

"Every game is new," defenseman Jonathan Ericsson said. "If you lose a game (at this point in the series) you have another coming up."

Billionaire Tory Burch's Seven Lessons For Entrepreneurs

Walk down any sidewalk from New York to Shanghai and you’ll see women wearing ballet flats with Tory Burch’s distinctive double-T logo. They’re also wearing her patterned tunics, handbags, clutches, and bold country club–chic pants, skirts, dresses, and tops. Tory Burch hasn’t just made preppy clothes hip and modern, she’s built a multi-billion dollar fashion empire in less than a decade. And she’s leveraging her experience and influence for the greater good with the Tory Burch Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering female entrepreneurs.

Recently named to Forbes’ list of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women, Burch has helped change the world’s notion of what being a female entrepreneur means—the fashion mogul has proven that it doesn’t have to be hawking cupcakes or launching a Mommy blog. At just 46 years old,Wanna to buy the new canadagoosecampdown now? she’s part of a growing group of women who are newly minted, self-made billionaires, like fellow power woman & Spanx founder, Sara Blakely. Including Burch and Blakely, 16 of this year’s Forbes Power Women founded their own businesses.Jovani designer backpackfactory and celebrity style evening gowns.

I recently sat down with Burch at the inaugural Forbes Women’s Summit where she opened up about her dazzling journey to the top of the fashion world—and offered some entrepreneurial advice and leadership lessons she’s learned the hard way on her journey to incredible success.

1. “Follow your passion.” Although Burch grew up as a self-described tomboy, she became interested in art history and fashion in college at the University of Pennsylvania and went on to work for influential designers like Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang. And when she decided to launch her company, she dreamed big—she wanted a global brand. “I never designed before this company,” Burch says. “[You have to] take a risk and put yourself out there.” In fact, 16 of the 100 women on this year’s Forbes Power Women list—which Burch is on—have launched their own businesses.

2. “Thicken your skin.” Burch went through 10 names (including Tory by TRB) for her company before reluctantly settling on using her own. And while she’s proved wrong all of the naysayers who thought she’d fizzle out in a flash, having her own name on the brand makes her acutely sensitive to criticism. Which is why she relies so much on the advice of her parents to thicken her skin. “Being a sensitive, thoughtful person opens you up for criticism and being affected by it,” Burch says. “I heard and tried not to listen to a lot of negativity. The noise and negativity were just the sidebar.”

3. “Put the right people in the right positions.” Burch describes herself as a very loyal person, and one of the toughest business lessons she learned was that loyalty—a strength in most circumstances—can also be a weakness for her. Loyalty made her reluctant to make staff personnel changes. “When you have the wrong people in the wrong position it affects the entire company,” she says. “It’s a hard lesson to learn. It has a ripple effect.” Be aware of the potential for your strength to become an Achilles Heel.2013 Collection germanmilitaria 1672 Styles.

4.We supply high quality christianlouboutinshoes here. “Create relationships.” As part of the programming for her Tory Burch Foundation, there are 10 mentoring events a year. That’s because Burch believes that networking, collaborating with, and rooting for other women helps you make lasting relationships that organically further your career and set you up for success. “Every job that you have might not be the perfect job, but you really take away different things, and you create relationships,” says Burch, who counts Saks’ Ron Frasch, Google’s, Eric Schmidt, and her older brother and company’s co-president, as major mentors in her life.

5. “Go big.” On the one hand, Burch had a five-year plan of opening three stores. (She has launched dozens around the country and world, including stores in Portland, Oregon and Duabi.) On the other hand, from the beginning, she knew she wanted to build a global brand. Just as she’s had to roll with setbacks, she’s also embraced the happy boosts that come along the way, like the Oprah Winfrey show “Next Big Thing” shout-out that gave her 8 million website hits, and media coverage from her editor friends in the magazine world.

Luck is important, but the power of networking and collaboration helps you make your luck.

6. “Be authentic.” While talking about her personal life and her children are off-limits,Wholesale Best formalofficedresses Quick delivery. she is an open book when it comes to her business, her foundation, and the Tory Burch brand in general. One for instance? When her company changed operating systems, they endured a glitch-y six-month period where they couldn’t track shipments. But rather than hiding the snafu, Burch decided to embrace social media and be transparent with customers about what was happening. The result? Her customers became her advocates.

7. “Buckle up.” When you see someone as successful as Burch, it’s easy to view that success as a destination she’s reached, instead of an ongoing journey that takes hard work, creative solutions, handling setbacks, and constant innovation. Burch admits that being an entrepreneur isn’t for everyone: She works long hours and remembers the early days when her business was launching when she would put all of her children to bed and then be on the phone until 4am with her Hong Kong office. “Buckle up, and know that it’s going to be a tremendous amount of work, but embrace it,” says Burch. Setbacks are always going to be there—some of them even bigger than the challenge of launching a business in the first place—and it’s crucial to think of them as learning opportunities.

Alan Faena’s Argentine Residence

ONE HUNDRED miles from Buenos Aires, deep in the Argentine pampas, at the end of a dirt road that runs through miles of harvest-ready corn and indigenous trees, stands an incongruously ornate white gate. Behind the gate an elegant allée of trees leads, in turn, to more allees of ancient oaks unfurling in precise diagonals. And across an expansive lawn a white greyhound bounds behind a Gatsby-like figure clad in white from the top of his feathered hat to the hem of his breeches: Argentine fashion designer–turned–real estate developer Alan Faena.

When Faena bought this historic , known as San Juan de Vasquez, in 2005, along with its 2,500 acres of fertile farmland, the place had fallen into disrepair with the declining fortunes of the large Catholic family that owned it. Faena insisted that its 200-year-old paintings and other family heirlooms be kept intact and then spent two years carefully restoring it to its former grandeur, while also incorporating his own flair for dramatic decorative touches: walls painted a rich red, gold-trimmed velvet curtains and immense gilded sconces. Across the lawn he installed an immense decorative fountain that has the same long footprint as the house.

Reinvention on this scale is Faena’s specialty. The ambitious restoration recalls what he’d done for the Puerto Madero district of Buenos Aires, a project he began 10 years ago. Before Faena—the 49-year-old son of a second-generation Syrian Jewish textile manufacturer—Puerto Madero was just another stretch of urban wasteland. Wedged on a narrow spit of land near the marshy flatlands of the Rio de la Plata, the abandoned docklands had no streets, a few gutted buildings and “chest-high grass,” Austin Hearst, an early investor, remembers.Shop for buywatches online. “It looked like a junkyard with wild dogs,” adds Hearst’s then-partner, entrepreneur Christopher Burch. “If you tried to create the worst possible real estate in the world, this was it.”

Faena saw in this impoverished landscape the potential for “a building where music,Buy cheap swiss replica watches online, it's a good place for man and lady to choose quality hermespurse. Enjoy yourself! art, culture, service, flavor, knowledge, love and freedom can all come together.” Aiming to create something that would “expand people’s lives,” he coaxed architect Philippe Starck into designing his first South American project—transforming a 100-year-old grain depository into a hotel. A local group of architects converted an abandoned mill into an arts center. He also invited Lord Norman Foster’s firm, Foster & Partners, to design a residential condominium—also his first in South America. The $200 million project resulted in some of the most expensive real estate in Buenos Aires, and copycat developers quickly followed suit. Today the neighborhood resembles a South American version of Tribeca. “We created a place out of nothing,” says Faena.

Now he hopes to repeat this success in Miami. With his partner, Russian billionaire Leonard Blavatnik, he has bought up four city blocks along South Beach’s Collins Avenue, including the ’40s-era Saxony Hotel, and enlisted a roster of A-list talent to construct another Faena district.Sale cheap bridalgown online, white, black, berry, Graphite canada goose victoria parka hot sale. Foster is again designing residential condominiums, while Rem Koolhaas’s firm, OMA, will create an arts center, retail spaces and a high-tech parking garage. The renamed Faena Hotel will be refurbished by designers Roman and Williams, whose resumé includes New York City hot spots The Standard and the Ace Hotel.

Although the asking price of the penthouse in the Foster structure is a mind-boggling $50 million—$16 million more than the previous South Beach record—for Faena, the project isn’t merely about developing real estate to sell to the highest bidder. He sees his efforts in more grandiose terms and has taken to calling his creative partners the “Collaboratory, a laboratory of collaborations.Shop the latest shoxshoes on the world's largest fashion site.” He adds: “It’s the first time that a voice is arriving from the south to North America—and it’s not only my voice, but the voice of the entire region. So we feel responsible for that flag—all the messages, the feelings, our mentality, our music, our dancing, our way of living.”

The way of living he hopes to export isn’t the cultural pastiche of and one might encounter at Epcot (though there will be a version of his Buenos Aires tango show), but instead embraces simple ideas, like the indoor-outdoor living in which he revels. Faena is fiercely proud of the Foster condominium’s balconies, which rival the interior living spaces, which range from 1,307 to 4,730 square feet. These were inspired in part by his , where he surrounded the original house with wide , verandas sheltered by eaves. Designed by Brandon Haw—the architect who oversaw the residential towers in Buenos Aires—the Miami will boast aerodynamic white curves built by the same company that constructed the metal skin on Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. “It’s a translation of his kind of lifestyle,” says Haw. “He’s a dreamer, and he has a vision of the world he wants to create.” Faena adds: “It’s not about a building, it’s not about making a hotel. The most interesting thing is curating a neighborhood.”

“I thought the development needed to be a premium project with an exciting legacy, and that’s Alan,” says Blavatnik. “Alan thinks big,” says Robin Standefer, cofounder of Roman and Williams. So in addition to the simplicity of generous balconies and a wider-than-usual stretch of gardens (designed by Miami landscape architect Raymond Jungles), Faena would like the new hotel to evoke the resorts of the French Riviera’s golden era. Its eclectic ethos—from a sleek yacht-like restaurant to a formal, palatial living room—will reflect the amalgamation of styles at his . “Everyone who came to Argentina took the best from Italy, France, Spain and made a mixture,” he says. The Canada Goose Manitoba Jacket has a removable hood and is a slim, modern fit which makes it ideal for city streets or Arctic tundra.benebags Adds Standefer: “Working with him is very much about the visual effect that a space will have on someone.”

What's Behind The BrandZ Top 100 Ranking And Seemingly Unbeatable Apple

Strong brands impact much more than revenues and profit margins: They can drive competitive advantage, command a price premium and bolster a company’s resilience to crises. The intense competition among the most valuable brands in some of the categories in the 2013 Millward Brown Optimor BrandZ Top 100 ranking – released today – affirms the impact a brand’s strength has on its value, with the fiercest battles won by those that combine solid financial performance with great brand equity.

In personal care, L’Oreal leapfrogged Gillette and Colgate with a 30% rise in value to become the most valuable brand in this category– all three are worth between $17 and $18 billion, so competition was tight. L’Oreal successfully introduced new, higher-performing products to tempt customers away from private label, including “cosmeceuticals,” which combine cosmetic and medical benefits to appeal to consumers’ desire for products that multitask. The brand continues to be a leader in research and innovation, creating high quality products that give it an attractive product portfolio, which is customized to the local market.

Gillette continued to target younger men in an effort to convert new, life-long customers, and received one of the highest scores among all personal care brands for Brand Contribution – a measure of brand equity based on customer sentiment.Find the perfect rolexshop photos and be inspired for your Meanwhile, Colgate’s healthy brand value growth of 15% was not quite enough for it to maintain its number two spot.A turquoisebeads is the most formal female attire for social occasions. Despite an intensely competitive environment, and already having a high global penetration, Colgate increased its market share over the last year, and its brand strength was a facilitator of that growth.

The battle for the top is also driving change in the car sector. Toyota has overtaken BMW to regain its position as the world’s most valuable car brand, increasing its value 12% to $24 billion, after its strong brand helped it recover from a number of product recalls in 2009 and 2010. It has a value proposition that people really want, offering luxury features on an affordable, environmentally conscious car.

With a significant value increase of 60% in the last year, Zara now stands in front of Nike as the most valuable apparel brand. Fast fashion is in, and the Spanish brand has consistently delivered, while expanding its business to children, men and even home decor.

It’s long been expected that online brands will eventually gain supremacy over their brick-and-mortar rivals, and Amazon’s beating of Walmart to become the most valuable retail brand – worth $46 billion, a growth of 34% – may suggest this is happening. As well as having a compelling, consistently-executed promise, Amazon makes itself available wherever customers are – even establishing a brick-and-mortar presence with its Amazon lockers, self-service delivery locations allowing customers to collect parcels ordered online. Walmart delivers well, too, and has grown its value 5% to $36 billion,Has anyone brought a beadsfactory?‎ but in China, a strategic market, its performance is challenged by the fact that consumers prefer to buy from local markets and shops. Regardless of whether they started as online or brick-and-mortar businesses, retail brands can no longer rely solely on their core channels to market their products, and the most valuable brands in coming years will be those that recognize they need to be present at all possible touchpoints in consumers’ lives.

There are insurgent brands in a number of categories that have the potential to catch up with the leaders in the next few years. You'll be the queen of the room in this ssuniform evening gown.

So how can brands become the most valuable brand in their category – and then widen the gap between themselves and the competitors nipping at their heels? Out-advertising everybody else like Samsung will only bring a short-term boost to value. The brands that have risen furthest in the Top 100 all score significantly higher than average on the BrandZ equity measures of Meaningful, Different and Salient.

This means they provide a superior brand experience; creating value that sets them apart from the competition. Apple is the archetypal “meaningfully different” brand. There is clarity about what their brand stands for – positioning, message and values – with a value proposition that’s communicated powerfully and consistently. All of the top risers have a distinctive brand personality, which is more likely to generate passion and create brand advocates.

Continuing to renew the brand is essential to remain in contention over a number of years,Choose from a wide collection of replicajewelry that includes womens clutches, hobos, satchels, and totes. and the most valuable brands are exceptional at staying relevant to customers. IBM’s reinvention as a greater-margin consultancy which drives a “Smarter Planet” is a good example of this.

Feds Photograph Guilty Diamond Jeweler and Accused KPMG Honcho Passing Bags of Cash

In exchange for confidential information worth of millions of dollars to him, well-to-do Encino diamond jeweler Bryan Shaw admits, he gave his tipster at KPMG a $12,000 Rolex Daytona Cosmograph watch.

Shaw, of Shaw Diamond Co. located in a high-rise on Ventura Boulevard, pleaded guilty Monday to federal charges for making illegal stock trades based on alleged advice from Scott London. London, also a wealthy guy, was fired by KPMG -- one of the world's Big Four auditing firms -- on April 5, the day he got arrested by the feds.

The behavior of these two men who had everything -- and now, it seems, have nothing -- goes beyond just money business.

London, 50, of Agoura Hills,Discover suits with ASOS. has been charged with conspiracy to commit securities fraud through insider trading.

London and Shaw, who lived just down the 101 Freeway from London in the gorgeous Ventura County neighborhood of Sherwood Lake, apparently didn't notice investigators snapping shots as they allegedly boldly passed money in broad daylight.

Authorities say London -- so trusted at KPMG that he supervised hundreds of accounting professionals -- had easy access to the confidential information of its clients.

And according to Fred Shuster at City News Service:

"These two men were close friends who shared dinners, concerts,Wonderful Gucci handbags collection: beachweddingdresses and discount Gucci handbags by Styledrops. sporting events and secret information that brought profits to each of them," U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. said previously.A monclerjacketswomens is the clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony.

"London provided, and Shaw was all too happy to use, proprietary information that should have remained confidential. These men broke ethical rules and criminal laws for the sole purpose of lining their pockets with illegal profits."

London even advised Shaw on how to structure the purchase of stocks in order to avoid getting caught, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Must have been horrendous advice.

It's hard to imagine how impervious this pair must have felt. Once, authorities say, London met Shaw on a corner in Encino and got a bag of $5,000 -- a bag, like in a bad movie -- all in $100 bills.

That was thanks, apparently, for the February earnings announcement of Herbalife,All saxobankcycling and accessories are made with the same authentic materials as the originals.Work a crowd in this evening gown from germanuniforms. a client of KPMG's.

Later they met at the very busy Rite-Aid parking lot on the corner of Topanga Canyon and Ventura boulevards in Woodland Hills, where Shaw handed London another packet with $5,000 in cash inside, allegedly. (See their in-plain-sight exchange on first page of this post.)

This wad of cash was supposedly a share of profits from illegal insider trades based on information about Decker's February 2013 earnings announcement, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Shaw is set for sentencing on Sept. 16. London is scheduled for arraignment on Thursday, May 30 in Los Angeles.

Amazon's Web Services offering has received an official seal of approval by United States authorities, in a move that is likely to significantly boost the company's public sector business.

As part of that strategy, government agencies are required to make use of FedRAMP for risk assessment and security authorisation and Amazon has now shown that AWS meets the requirements of the programme, after vetting by a third-party assessor.

Nearly Three Months Later, Austin Still Adjusting to Plastic Bag Ban

Though Austin’s ban on plastic bags took effect March 1, the conversation about how consumers are coping is still going strong.

Austinites have been sounding off on social media about the benefits and inconveniences of banning plastic bags. One particularly in-depth conflict has erupted on an Austin Reddit thread, asking “How has Austin’s bag ban affected you?”

Numerous Redditors shared their views on how the ban has impacted their lives. Here’s a look at some of the most common themes that emerged:

Shopping has become more efficient: The inconvenience of bags has prompted shoppers to begin planning their trips more in advance so that their purchases don’t get out of hand.2013 Collection germanarmyuniforms 1672 Styles. “I now pre-emptively decline a bag and only purchase what I can comfortably carry in my hands,” Redditor nelsnelson writes. “This means that my meals are rarely made up of more than a literal handful of ingredients. It has made everything simpler.”

Plastic bags were convenient in the household: Many Austinites adapted to utilizing excess plastic bags in the household - those places where reusable bags just won't cut it. "“You obviously don't have to deal with poop,” argues Redditor austex_mike, “I need plastic bags for diapers.” User nuovo_donna is also struggling with life without free plastic bags: “I'm almost out of little liner bags for all of my wastebaskets, and I'll have to start buying plastic bags soon."

People are doing shopping outside city limits: People who live on the edges of Austin prefer not to deal with the inconvenience. Instead, suburb-dwellers find themselves making a large amount of purchases at stores beyond the city limits. Aforementioned user austex_mike concedes, “I'll be honest. Nothing beats the convenience of just using old grocery bags. I live in north Austin, so I just swing over to the Greenlawn HEB in Round Rock every now and then and do a big shopping trip.”

Some are calling for more measures: Those in favor of a full environmental makeover for the city of Austin think this is a step in the right direction. Redditor prophetjohn writes,Like a lot of women,Custom made bicyclesaddles0? “Pretty sure in the early stages, this is going to be a net negative. My hope is that it will promote a more reusable mindset that propagates beyond just plastic bags.”

Complaints to cashiers are off the charts: “Worst part is that they take it out on me,” former HEB employee and Reddit user Hyperdude reports. Current cashier Terramoura agrees: “In my opinion, if you are angry about the ban, you should complain to the city. I like the ban.Jovani designer prom dresses and celebrity style lacebodystockings for prom. Plastic is such a nuisance. Suicide Attack Kills Afghan Provincial Official

KABUL—A suicide bomber on Monday killed the influential head of the provincial council in northern Afghanistan’s Baghlan province, along with at least 13 other people,Our online store offer all kinds of kellywallet, such as women belt, hermes bags and so on, welcome to our online store!!! as the annual fighting season entered into full swing.

The blast is the latest in a series of deadly attacks in Afghanistan, which together have killed some 50 people in less than a week.

Council chairman Muhammad Rasoul Mohseni, four of his bodyguards, three policemen and six civilians died in the explosion in front of the provincial council building in Baghlan’s capital city of Pul-e-Khumri, according to Assadullah Shirzad, the provincial police chief. At least nine people were injured.

A health official in Baghlan said the bomber was wearing a police uniform and blew himself up while hugging Mr. Mohseni. A local reporter who was on the scene said he saw bodies of uniformed officers and civilians lying on both sides of the road. The blast shattered the windows of the provincial council building, and damaged two cars, he said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Ethnically divided Baghlan straddles the main route from Kabul to northern Afghanistan, and the Taliban have long maintained strongholds in the province’s Pashtun areas. There are kinds of the latest womenshoes with kinds of colorways.

Monday’s blast marks the first major attack in northern Afghanistan since the Taliban announced their annual spring offensive last month, saying they would target high-profile political leaders.Short Sleeve Blue Lace Fashion Long 2012 Embroidery Latest rolexwatches. Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned Monday’s attack, describing it in a statement as a “cowardly act.We provide you the most beautiful gowns, such as cheap 100%Silk Dresses and germanww2uniforms and so on.”

A powerful political figure in northern Afghanistan, Mr. Mohseni, an ethnic Tajik from the province’s Andarab valley, was closely associated with the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance of Tajik, Uzbek and Hazara commanders. His brother, Azim Mohseni, is an influential lawmaker in Kabul.

“His death is a very big loss for the people of Baghlan, especially for Tajiks,” said Najia Aimaq, another member of parliament from Baghlan, speaking during Mr. Mohseni’s funeral. You may see many other fake websites posting available cheaprolexwatches, be aware of fake retailers. She said tensions at the ceremony were high, as many worried they worried they would be targeted next.

Ms. Aimaq said she fears the security situation in her home province is deteriorating, after what seemed like an improvement a year ago. “Last winter, the Taliban were absent in parts of the province, but now they are back,” she said.

Baghlan became more violent as the surge of foreign troops in 2010-2011 pushed the Taliban out of their traditional strongholds in the south to other parts of the country. “Day by day, the Taliban are advancing into new districts,” the late Mr. Mohseni told The Wall Street Journal in a 2010 interview.

On Thursday another insurgent group, Hezb-e-Islami, killed at least 15 people, including six Americans, in a suicide bombing that targeted a coalition convoy in Kabul. And on Friday, Taliban bombings killed at least six civilians and three policemen in the southern city of Kandahar. Separate attacks in the provinces of Farah, Khost and Helmand in recent days killed several other policemen and civilians.

The Taliban have been focusing on hitting Afghan forces, which take increasing responsibility for security as most foreign troops prepare to withdraw from the country by the end of next year.

Couple Flown To Wrong Continent And Their Bags Lost Too Just To Rub It In

A couple flown to the wrong continent started out in Los Angeles, connected in Istanbul, Turkey, and ended up almost 7,000 miles out of their way in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Los Angeles residents Sandy Valdivieso and Triet Vo bought tickets to Dakar, Senegal, on the west coast of Africa. However, they were ultimately delivered not just to the wrong town or the wrong country but to an entirely different continent. Bangladesh is located in South Asia.We invite you to experience choose pnikeairshoes for you.

The mix-up happened because when the airline issued their boarding pass, it wrongly used the airport code DAC (Dhaka) instead of DKR (Dakar). When the flyers boarded the IST-DAC leg in Turkey’s capital,Long and slim-fitting, the beadsbeads is equally appropriate for strolling a city street or hiking a snowy trail. they still didn’t understand that they had been booked on the wrong flight.

“When the flight attendant said we were heading to Dhaka, we believed that this was how you pronounced ‘Dakar’ with a Turkish accent,” Valdivieso told The Los Angeles Times.

The couple didn’t stress it at all, apparently. They went right to sleep — and didn’t wake up until they were well on their way. Oops.

In Bangladesh, the Turkish Air rep didn’t take the story at face value, perhaps assuming that they were experiencing some buyer’s remorse at the trip to the very poor, crowded nation south of India.2013 Collection germanarmyuniforms 1672 Styles.

According to the LAT account, “Officials with the carrier insisted that they had to track down and hear the recording of Valdivieso booking a trip to Senegal before they could acknowledge that the wrong airport code had been put on their tickets.”

Eventually, Turkish Air admitted that they had done something wrong and flew the couple to Dakar without an additional charge. Their bags, of course, whiffed, and didn’t show up at their destination for another two days.

The flight to the wrong continent actually took place in December, but it has taken months for Turkish Air to acknowledge that they owed the couple some compensation for the crazy ordeal.

The Telegraph said that a Turkish Air spokeswoman has now acknowledged that the airline is “very, very sorry that this happened.” To compensate for their trouble, the couple has been offered free economy tickets anywhere they want to go on Turkish.

There wasn’t any word about how eager they would be to make use of that particular gift. You'll be the queen of the room in this ssuniform evening gown.

One poster on Flyertalk, a discussion forum for frequent flyers, noted that it wasn’t all the fault of Turkish Airlines:

“[T]here’s absolutely no excuse for the couple not to check on what they’ve booked, especially, when flying to a foreign country – one apparently they’ve never been to previously. Since they didn’t recognize the mistake, how is the airline supposed to? Once brought to [Turkish Air's] attention, they did the right thing and flew them to Dakar free of charge…”

Apparently, this 7,000 mile mistake can happen in the other direction too. A poster on frequent flyer blog View From the Wing said: “I’ve had to deal with a Bangladeshi passenger trying to check-in at Gatwick for a flight home that was actually routing him to Senegal via Ghana. So from personal experience, I can vouch that Dakar vs Dhaka is not a unique situation!”

Ouch. Double-check those tickets, folks.Custom made cheapreplicawatches? We don’t want you to end up being flown to the wrong continent.

What We Can Learn From Mel Brooks About Racism

“Blazing Saddles” is generally regarded as Mel Brooks’s best movie: It was ranked sixth on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American comedies and it was nominated for three Academy Awards. “Best,” though, is a relative term. Brooks’s Borscht Belt-meets-absurdism style is so unique and so indelible that what we call the “best” is usually the first of his movies we fell in love with.

It’s safer to say that “Blazing Saddles” was Brooks’s most timely movie, even his most serious movie. And it’s as safe to say that there wouldn’t be a Mel Brooks installment of PBS’s “American Masters” (premiering May 20; check local listings) without “Blazing Saddles.”

The opening scene is terrific and justifiably famous. We see a mix of Chinese and black workers pounding hammers under the desert sun. Their vicious and idiotic white overseers demand they sing spirituals like they did when they were slaves. The workers huddle, break apart, and slowly we hear a sweet, beautiful voice: “I get no kick from champagne.” Almost before we can process the joke, Brooks lays a second one atop the first: the black workers join in, harmonizing with the lead singer. This isn’t one person singing Cole Porter; this is a full, sophisticated a cappella routine. Brooks continues to add inversion after inversion, but the jokes work because the first few bars of that unexpected, anachronistic song say so much about racial ignorance.Discover suits with ASOS.Wonderful Gucci handbags collection: beachweddingdresses and discount Gucci handbags by Styledrops.

Coming less than a decade after the Civil Rights Act, “Blazing Saddles” exploded white Americans’ fears of integration and affirmative action. (Just before the climax, we see a poster reading “Help Wanted: Heartless Villains For Destruction of Rock Ridge, $100 Per Day, Criminal RecAll saxobankcycling and accessories are made with the same authentic materials as the originals.ord Required, Hedley Lamarr, Equal Opportunity Employer.Work a crowd in this evening gown from germanuniforms.”) The brilliance of “Blazing Saddles” is that you can watch it dozens of times, that you can laugh again and again at the sex jokes, at the sublime silliness, and even at the jokes about racial stereotypes without pausing to think about the underlying premise long enough to call it by its malicious name. Hedley Lamarr’s initial scheme boils down to this: If you put a black person in a prominent municipal position, everyone in the town will leave. “Blazing Saddles” is the funniest movie ever made about “white flight,” which is probably why it continues to make so many people uncomfortable.

But once we decide that the comedy in “Blazing Saddles” is serious, does that mean we have to take everything in the movie seriously? How are we supposed to view the elaborate ending? How are we supposed to understand the fantastically intricate way that Brooks pulled back the camera and broke the frame?

First, we have to remember the context. “Blazing Saddles” was released in 1974, during the heyday of American postmodernism. Thomas Pynchon only just won the National Book Award for “Gravity’s Rainbow.” John Barth’s “Chimera” was another recent winner. If we think about the ending within that context, it looks like a normal postmodern setup.

The ending only becomes more antic and more intricate. Hedley Lamarr leaves the soundstage and goes to the Chinese Theater to watch the premiere of “Blazing Saddles.” He watches the good guys coming for him and it causes him to try to flee. Watching the movie is part of watching the movie. (It’s a joke Brooks loved so much that he used it again in “Spaceballs.”) We go back and forth from the movie to the set to the movie. With the Bari Jay collection you'll be able to wear your monclerjackets again! Some characters act like actors playing characters. Some characters never drop the act. Is this comic or is it only silly? Is this postmodern or a joke on postmodernism?

We can’t answer the question because Brooks can’t answer the question. The ending of “Blazing Saddles” is a grand-though-hilarious failure because we’re never sure where the set-up ends and the joke begins. Parody had become inseparable from the thing itself.

Perhaps what Brooks was saying with the end of “Blazing Saddles” is that culture had become too anarchic to parody. There were no rules that artists had to follow. We would accept it all as serious art and Brooks approved. The end of “Blazing Saddles” calls back to the end of the Marx Brothers’ “Duck Soup.” In that surreal, anarchic ending, during Freedonia’s war against the Sylvanians, Groucho’s uniform constantly changes. One minute he’s in revolutionary war garb and everyone else is dressed like World War I soldiers; the next, Groucho is wearing a civil war infantry hat, then a confederate cavalry uniform. It’s a beautifully nonsensical statement of pacifism: war never ends, we only change costumes.

The movie reminds us that historical change is an illusion. We’re still genocidal, still racist. But perhaps we can use humor to get us to think differently. The end of “Blazing Saddles” isn’t an uncanny moment when Brooks’s parody echoes “serious” culture. The end of “Blazing Saddles” is a statement about how serious comedy has always been. It’s a reminder that much of what we sometimes call aesthetic experimentation came from screen comedies, from absurdist novels and films, from the need to push the comic envelope, to find new jokes. The ends is a proclamation about comedy and about postmodernism: Now we are all Marx Brothers.

Battle of the Uniforms: Orioles win title

Where is the Rally Squirrel when you really need him?

The polls have closed, our Battle of the Uniforms is officially over and the No. 1-seeded St. Louis Cardinals wound up suffering their toughest defeat since at least the final three games of last season's National League Championship Series -- and perhaps as far back as the 1985 World Series. Cardinals fans can't blame this one on a bad call by Don Denkinger, either. The Baltimore Orioles decisively beat the Cardinals in the championship round -- also known as the Battle of the Birds -- receiving 59 percent of vote compared to 41 percent for the Cardinals.

St. Louis fans must be getting really tired of losing to teams with orange-and-black uniforms.

The Cardinals weren't the only high seed to disappoint, though. All the most famous classic uniforms -- the Yankees' pinstripes, the Dodgers' blue, the Tigers' Old English D, the two Cardinals balanced on a bat -- fell short in the end, while the lesser-heralded Orioles go home the winners.

Which is not to say the Orioles are undeserving champions. Far from it.

Baltimore's uniform has some great style features, beginning with those wonderful orange and black colors (always an outstanding look) and extending to the great cartoon Oriole logo on the cap (much preferable to the ornithologically correct version). It's a classic uniform that looked great on Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson and Jim Palmer, and it still looks great on Adam Jones, Matt Wieters and Chris Davis.

On the other hand … can we talk about those home caps with the white-panel front?

This is a design style from the fashion-challenged late '70s and early '80s, and it still looks just as bad as it did then. Manager Buck Showalter famously griped about Ken Griffey Jr. wearing his cap backward in the '90s (those darn kids today!), but he could improve his team's look by loosening up and ordering all his players to wear their cap backward.

Apparently, though, our voters either like that cap style or love the rest of the uniform so much that they overlooked it. Despite being seeded 13th because of those caps, the Orioles beat higher-ranked uniforms in every round on their way to the championship.

Not even Jeffrey Maier could have slowed Baltimore's run.

And, hey, maybe the Orioles could wear their new crown instead of that cap. And if not, well, at least the rest of the uniform is outstanding.

So, congratulations, Baltimore fans.where to buy promdress 2012-buy supra shoes online. Our fashion police have declared your team the best-dressed in baseball. Here's hoping the Orioles are also baseball's best-dressed team come October and the postseason.

Today the seamier side of liberation is not entirely absent from popular accounts. “The Guns at Last Light: The War in Western Europe, 1944-1945,” the final volume of Rick Atkinson’s best-selling trilogy about the war, published this month, includes a brief discussion of the Army’s campaign against venereal disease (“Don’t forget the Krauts were fooling around France a long time before we got here,” an Army publication warned soldiers in December 1944), as well as a reference to Mr. Lilly’s work.Jovani designer prom dresses and celebrity style lacebodystockings for prom.

The few scholars who have looked more closely at rape by G.I.’s have attributed its racially skewed prosecution to “the Jim Crow army,” which was happy to depict rape as a problem only among the noncombat support units to which black soldiers were mostly limited.

“White soldiers got a pass because of their combat status,” said William I. Hitchcock, author of “The Bitter Road to Freedom” (2008), a history of the liberation of Western Europe from the perspective of often traumatized local civilians. “The Army wasn’t interested in prosecuting a battle-scarred sergeant.”

Ms.A royaloak is the clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony. Roberts, who closely studied transcripts of 15 courts-martial in Northern France,Like a lot of women,Custom made bicyclesaddles0? certainly sees American racism at work. “Let’s Look at Rape!,” a 1944 Army pamphlet credited to “a Negro Chaplain,” contained a prominent illustration of a noose — a clear suggestion that the Army was going to “protect the color line,” she writes. (Among the soldiers hanged for rape and murder was Louis Till, the father of Emmett Till.)

But her analysis is hardly more flattering to the French, whose often shaky accusations, as she sees them, reflected their own need to project the humiliations of occupation onto a racial “other.” (“We have no more soldiers here, just a few Negroes who terrorize the neighborhood,” one civilian remarked in April 1945.)

Ms. Roberts said the book has attracted strong interest from French publishers, where willingness to explore the darker side of liberation jostles with a lingering fear of seeming ungrateful. At home, she insisted, her goal is not “to sour the story of Normandy.”

Women fill Walmart bags with goods they didn't pay for

They went into the store with empty Walmart bags.

But on their way out, the bags were filled with nearly $800 in goods they didn’t pay for.

“(Walmart security) witnessed two women come into the store and shop for one and a half hours,” Long reported. “The women filled a grocery cart full of clothing items (valued at $766.79) and also added a bag of dog food and a bag of cat food ($32.36). They filled another cart with food items.”

Security also noticed that the women had brought empty Walmart bags into the store — but the bags weren’t empty for long.

“At the self-checkout, the women paid for the items in their food cart but did not pay for the items in their clothing cart, which were already in Walmart bags,” LongChoose from wide range of canadagoosecoats to buy online.’s report says. “They walked beyond the point of sale and were stopped by security.”

Grisham and Payton had three children ages 10, 5 and 6 months with them. Two were sick, the officer noted.

“I waited almost an hour for the father of the children to drive from Carthage to pick up the children,” Long reported.

Both women were arrested and taken to the Putnam County jail.

It wasn’t the first time for Grisham — she was already banned from Walmart in Lebanon after being arrested there for shoplifting. In addition, she had a capias for failing to pay fines on a previous theft charge of $414 at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department.

Alexander Fury: ‘Issie’ Blow, the pioneer who gave us style – and bags of it

As you may or may not have heard,You'll be the queen of the room in this ssuniform evening gown. the life and wardrobe of the late Isabella Blow will be celebrated in an exhibition entitled Isabella Blow: Fashion Galore!, opening at London’s Somerset House in November.

Some of you will be queuing to buy tickets already; but others will be asking: Isabella who? But bar a certain morbid curiosity many hold for pawing through the artefacts of the late and great, why, you might ask,Our gorgeous goodleddownlight2011 are perfect for wedding, proms or any occasion when you need a little extra warmth and glamour. would we care?

We should care because Isabella Blow – “Issie” to her friends – was a fashion pioneer. Scratch that. Issie, who died in 2007, was never really about fashion. In fact, the subtitle to the Somerset House exhibition is the only thing that jars for me. Blow was about style: grand style, the kind of style that, ironically, went out of fashion somewhere around the Second World War, when people stopped having balls and “presenting” their debutantes.

But Isabella’s feeling for style led to some of the greatest fashion of the past quarter-century. Blow is credited with “discovering” the milliner Philip Treacy, and Lee Alexander McQueen. Community gathers to watch students step out in style at Montgomery County High School prom

Montgomery County's Clay Community Center looked like the site of a movie premiere Saturday night.

Hundreds of onlookers began gathering early in the evening behind a metal fence that had been set up along the community center's front sidewalk.

Some brought lawn chairs; others arrived early enough to get a seat in the bleachers. Latecomers stood six deep, and cars were parked along the bypass because parking was at a premium. There were velvet ropes, a red carpet and a sharply dressed announcer with a microphone.

The stars of the evening weren't actors and actresses, though: They were seniors from Montgomery County High School and their prom dates.Cheap ballgown on sale in our shop christian louboutin.

Pearl Back wore a pair of binoculars he'd bought at a yard sale earlier in the day.

"The kids go all out for this prom," said Mary Hiler, who was waiting to watch her grandson and granddaughter make their big entrance.

Jennifer Trimble, whose family regularly hosts foreign exchange students, said the spectacle surrounding prom has gradually increased since 1984, when she was a senior.

"It's just grown year after year," she said.Work a crowd in this evening gown from germanuniforms. "The community expects it now. What are they going to be in? How are they going to be dressed?"

Kenn Johnson, a retired teacher who taught at the school, said other high school events, such as the musical and Junior Miss pageant, are also well-attended.

"It's a small town, and we don't have a lot to do," he said. "Everybody supports their kids."

"And everyone else's," Trimble added.

On Saturday,A monclerjacketswomens is the clothing worn by a bride during a wedding ceremony. the students formed a parade of vehicles in which they made a grand arrival, completing red carpet interviews and posing for pictures before strutting into the prom.

The parking lot looked like a classic car show might be about to begin.

"Everybody likes to have something a little bit different," said senior Shelby Chandler. She was at the front of the line of vehicles in a 2013 Ford F150 procured by her dad, who works at an auto dealership.

Other modes of transportation included a tractor-trailer cab; pickup trucks pulling a pontoon boat and a horse trailer; a racing pace car; and many antique vehicles.

Hannah Turner and Gabe Kirk came in a replica of the Tardis, the time machine from the British science fiction series Doctor Who.Fremont ralphlaurenhoody team sprint training.

Turner said she and some friends had planned to come in a limo, but they decided that was too expensive.

"Doctor Who's kinda my favorite," Turner said. "Dad was like, 'Why don't we just make a Tardis?'"

The contraption, which included a smoke machine, was pulled on a trailer behind a pickup truck driven by Turner's father, Todd Turner.

Hannah Turner said she wasn't sure what would become of the Tardis after prom, but her family just put in a pool, so it might be put to use as a changing room.

Gabe Rupe took an understated approach, driving himself and his date in his gray 1994 Buick Regal Custom.

But, he said, "It's got more sentimental value than every car here put together.

"My entire high school career is wrapped up in this car," he said. "What better way to finish than what's been with me all along?"

Tickets to the prom are free, but to get them, students must have fewer than 10 unexcused absences and have paid all their fees — including library fines and lunchroom tabs, said Diana Cline, a Spanish teacher who serves as co-sponsor for the prom.

Cline said the students hold fundraisers to raise money for the prom. This year's class raised $6,000. On top of that, the community donated $13,000 in money and prizes for the after-prom party, Cline said.

So after dancing the first part of the night away, many promgoers will spend the rest of the night playing games, culminating in an early-morning water balloon fight on the soccer field.

"It's going to be a lot of fun," junior McKenna Bowling said.

Fifteen-year-old outside center Kayla Canett and sophomore flyhalf Richelle Stephens dotted down hat tricks, while No. 8 Alex Beckett and wing Katherine Wilches also added five-pointers.Browse hundreds of beautiful canadagooseyorkvilleparka and find the perfect fit for you!

Fallbrook needs to win a couple of more championship before the term “dynasty” can be applied, but right now, there’s no one that competes with the Southern California powerhouse. This third consecutive championship was important, however, as two of the seniors who played their last game with the Warriors today were on the ground during the club’s first season.

Flanker Megan Pinson and scrumhalf Irayda Macedo started with the U14s, and they’re hallmarks of the vast progress and continued success that Fallbrook has enjoyed over the years. It was a special motivation around which the team rallied, and they couldn’t have given a better ending to two of the team’s founding members.

“It’s definitely an end of an era for us,” Fallbrook coach Craig Pinnell said. “For those players, to be able to finish it off on a high, that means a lot to the team. That’s where the team’s focus was.”

Pinson and Macedo did more than just stick around for six years. They, along with standout seniors like Clarissa Perez and Wilches, have been instrumental in keeping the winning seasons alive.

“The main thing they’ve brought is team spirit, bringing in those younger players and showing them what it’s all about,” Pinnell said of the seniors. “The veterans have been mentoring the ones coming through, and it’s been very satisfying for them. They’ve prepared the younger ones for the positions they’re going to vacate,Long and slim-fitting, the beadsbeads is equally appropriate for strolling a city street or hiking a snowy trail. and now they can continue the legacy and keep us on the same smooth path we’ve got going.”

One standout who’s benefited greatly from her senior leadership is Canett. She had the best step of the final and looked at ease with ball in hand, weaving through defenders aplenty.

“She’s done more than I’ve ever seen her do before,” Pinnell said.Sale cheap bridalgown online, white, black, berry, Graphite canada goose victoria parka hot sale. “She’s a little jumpy jack-in-the-box; she was all over the place. She’s little and to just take to the pressure that the game started off with was awesome to see from a young player.”

Fallbrook has foregone true support from their high school, even though they do identify with the school, in order to accommodate the youth exploding through the ranks. Since they field a couple of middle-schoolers, Fallbrook High School doesn’t recognize the team as a school sport. But that’s not to say the Warriors are anonymous on school grounds.

“We did get texts and e-mails from our principal saying good luck,” Pinnell said. “But the sport is huge at school. We played a game against [Canada high school champion] Carson Graham, and we had 4-500 spectators to support. All of the students know who the rugby players are, even if they’re not wearing their jerseys before game day. From a coaching point of view, Marin [Pinnell] works there. The teachers and athletic department have huge respect for the program, even though we’re not officially on board. It’s really taken off and everyone know what rugby is.”

And rugby knows Fallbrook, the three-time girls high school champion.

Gatsby, and Other Luxury Consumers

The pages of “The Great Gatsby” are suffused with romance and dusted with sexual implication, but perhaps the most intensely and disturbingly erotic scene — the one that distills the novel’s seductive blend of desire and sorrow — involves clothes. Showing off his mansion to Daisy Buchanan, the great love of his life, and Nick Carraway, his diffident, dazzled neighbor, Jay Gatsby opens a cabinet in which his shirts “are piled like bricks in stacks a dozen high.”

He throws them into a pile, and as Nick notes the wondrous textures and colors — “stripes and scrolls and plaids in coral and lavender and faint orange, with monograms of Indian blue” — Daisy bursts into tears: “ ‘They’re such beautiful shirts,’ she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. ‘It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such — such beautiful shirts before.’ ”

A reader might speculate about other causes of her weeping,Kate Bosworth hasn't bought her burberryhandbags yet. but there is no reason not to take Daisy at her word. One of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s points is that beautiful things in abundance can produce a powerful aesthetic response, akin to the sublime.Designer energysaving listed for sale at a fraction of the retail price. And the sublimity of stuff, of shirts and cars and Champagne flutes and everything else that money can buy, is surely what drives Baz Luhrmann’s wildly extravagant adaptation of “Gatsby.”

The movie has been faulted, not entirely without justice, for its headlong embrace of the materialism that the novel views with ambivalence. Mr. Luhrmann, though following the book’s plot more or less faithfully, does not offer a stable moral perspective from which the world of its characters can be judged. Rather, he immerses the viewer in a sensual swirl of almost tactile opulence. That scene with the shirts is a triumph of production design and 3-D digital cinematography.Top brands at low prices in guccihandbags1. Really, you have never seen such beautiful shirts before.

But if you have gone to the movies recently you have witnessed similar moments of commodity fetishism. Jay Gatsby is hardly the only character reveling in the palpable, wearable tokens of his good fortune. Harmony Korine’s “Spring Breakers,” released to some bafflement in March, offers an almost uncanny echo of “Gatsby,” when Alien, the South Florida drug dealer played by James Franco, brags about how many pairs of shorts he owns. “Look at all my stuff!” he crows (though he uses another term), jumping up and down on his bed,Choose from a wide collection of replicajewelry that includes womens clutches, hobos, satchels, and totes. pointing out guns, bullets, cash and clothes. He also adds a profane twist to a phrase that appears in just about every term paper ever written about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third novel: “It’s the American Dream!”

Term-paper authors are eager to read irony into such invocations, but this writer is not so sure. Yes, Alien is something of a cretin, and Gatsby was a prisoner of his own fantasies. Both acquired their fortunes illegally, and both meet violent ends. But like Mr. Luhrmann’s dizzy rendering of “The Great Gatsby,” Mr. Korine’s fever dream of sun-baked collegiate hedonism does not attach moralistic warning labels or flags of satire to its images of excess.

Nor, for that matter, does “Pain & Gain,Find the perfect canadagoosemanitobajacket photos and be inspired for your wedding.” Michael Bay’s astonishing and misunderstood Florida true-crime story, in which a gang of gym rats — muscle-bound counterparts to the bikini-wearing coeds in “Spring Breakers” — go to violent extremes to secure their share of the dream. Sofia Coppola’s latest movie, “The Bling Ring,” is another American Dream parable, a deadpan, curiously touching story of young people who believe the finer things in life are theirs for the taking.

The 17th-century Puritan theologians debated whether prosperity was a visible sign of election, by which they meant predetermined salvation. Their modern-day descendants have no doubt: “If I deserve it, then the universe will serve it,” says Daniel Lugo, the ringleader of Mr. Bay’s Sun Gym gang. This blatant claim of entitlement may cause discomfort in some viewers, as will the buoyant, aggressive, nonjudgmental tone of this nasty comedy. Much as we may enjoy the spectacle of money, we usually prefer it to be accompanied by sentimental lessons about how there are more important things. We like cautionary tales about the dangers of greed and reassuring distinctions about the sources and uses of wealth. In Fitzgerald’s time, there was an imaginary line between old money and new, and another that separated legitimate fortunes from the kinds amassed by Gatsby and his criminal associates.

In our own time, we have no problem admiring the innovators and entrepreneurs who give charitable contributions and TED talks. And our screens are always full of predatory financiers, bad bosses and scheming scam artists. There are plenty of movies about heroic entrepreneurs clashing with unscrupulous capitalists, two sides of the same coin and thus part of a cultural currency of mixed feelings and wishful thinking. Sometimes we can’t tell the good guys from the bad guys: Is the Mark Zuckerberg of “The Social Network” a visionary or a scoundrel — or a latter-day Gatsby consumed by longing for an unattainable woman? Maybe all three.

Fitzgerald’s Gatsby may be subject to analogous confusion, but Mr. Luhrmann’s “Gatsby” is something else altogether. The movie’s view (literally, its visual presentation) of American materialism is not moralistic, but pornographic. It traffics in the sheer libidinal pleasure of money and what it can buy. So does “Spring Breakers,” though this may be less obvious because of the proximity of its images to pornography of a more familiar kind.

For Faith, Candy, Brit and Cotty, restless college students who are the film’s title characters, Spring Break is not really about sex.

Trouble’s last ride OK, Mr. Publisher, it’s time to git’er done!

MADISON COUNTY — When announcing my retirement, I made reference to letting “Trouble” having one last ride. Many of you may not remember Trouble. I will briefly explain. When I started writing columns causing trouble, I would get teased about being a trouble maker; “Trouble” was quickly becoming my nickname.

In a column about the 2006 general election, I created a fictional horse named Trouble and had a conversation with him about the upcoming election.Shortly after that, Emily Jarosz, a dear friend of mine gave him life. She presented me with a replica of what Trouble would look like. It is only fitting that Trouble appears for his final ride.

Please keep in mind parts of this conversation are fictional as you will see. I wanted my final column as publisher to be fun, but also to have meaning.I hope you enjoy Trouble’s farewell as much as I did writing it. And if some of you get a little ticked at me … get over it, because that’s just how it is!

Today is my last day (and it really is), and I’m just reflecting on my career when Trouble appears.Jovani designer prom dresses and celebrity style lacebodystockings for prom.“Trouble,” I ask, “Where have you been?” Trouble replies, “What do you mean, Mr. Publisher? It’s your fault that I haven’t been around much. And now I hear you are retiring. I was just getting started, and you pull the rug right out from underneath me; some friend you are.”

“Trouble,” I reply, “Don’t get yourself all worked up. We’ve had a great ride; we’ve accomplished a lot. Never thought when I arrived in Richmond that I would end my newspaper career here. Never thought I would retire here as well. Never thought I would create you of all things. I’m sure people thought I was crazy when I did that.”

Trouble gives me a big grin and says, “Mr. Publisher, you are crazy, but a good crazy. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. You will be missed.I notice tears in his eyes, “Trouble,” I said, “Don’t get all emotional on me. We both know it’s time for me to smell the roses; you can just do whatever retired horses do.”

I knew that would get a big smile out of him, but the smile fades fast.He says, “But it’s over; nobody will ever remember us.”More tears appear and I say, “Get a hold of yourself. We’ve got too much to be proud of for you to be carrying on like that; besides horses don’t cry. I doubt this community will forget what we’ve done. I’ve been told many times that we did this community a great service,Choose from a wide collection of replicajewelry that includes womens clutches, hobos, satchels, and totes. and we probably don’t fully comprehend the significance of that.”

Trouble just rolls his eyes at me and I continue explaining.“Then there was this guy at a chamber function that wanted to meet ‘the publisher who took down the city government single handed.’ So, Trouble I believe we will be remembered. We can leave with our heads held high and proud of what we’ve accomplished.”

The tears subside, and once again he’s smiling and says, “I feel much better, but there are individuals that felt we had an agenda.”

“Trouble,” I responded, “The only agenda we had was to make the Richmond Register a public watchdog; to make this newspaper relevant again. We did that. It was our time to shine. We were meant to be here, but it’s also our time to move on.”

Trouble just grins and neighs, but I can still see a little sadness on his face. I’m wondering what would possibly cheer him up on this bittersweet occasion. So, I said, “Trouble, what about one final ride down Main Street?”That gets him smiling again and he says, “I thought you would never ask. Hop on old man.”

I replied, “Watch what you say, it just may end up in one of my columns.”He just ignores me and motions me to saddle up.I’m ready to mount Trouble when I notice the special saddle on him. It is Kelly green trimmed in maroon and white. That meant this final ride was very special. I hop on and whisper in his ear. His ears perk up and shakes his head up and down. I tell him to keep it a secret.Cheap coolerbag top quality online,100% authentic guarantee.

We begin making our way downtown and citizens are lined up on each side of the street like a parade. I say to Trouble, “See, we won’t be forgotten.”He just grins and I continue, “I can’t believe Wallingford Broadcasting is doing a remote for us. What’s Kelly Wallingford extending a microphone to us for?” Trouble just grins and neighs.

We continue on down Main Street and see the Madison County Tax Watch group holding up signs that read “Thank You” and “We will miss you.” Trouble tells them to keep the pedal to the metal, they are making a difference in many ways.

Next on the parade route are Mendi Goble and David Rowelette from the chambers of commerce. We wonder what they are signing. It seems very serious.

Across the street are Chuck Fields and Greg Ferrell from the Paddy Wagon. Looks like they are holding up a green beer for us. Greg is wearing his Marshall Green, while Chuck is in Colonel maroon. What a fitting tribute. Maybe one day the green and maroon will meet on the gridiron again once EKU sheds the OVC.

I notice tears of joy on Trouble’s face as we continue, but I know he is just soaking in all this glory.Cheap ballgown on sale in our shop christian louboutin. This time Trouble says to me, “I can’t believe my eyes. Do you see what I see?” I reply, “I do.”We both see former EKU President Joanne Glasser, outgoing President Doug Whitlock and incoming President Michael Benson standing at the end of the Colonel Walk. They are all waving Colonel flags and shouting GO COLONELS.

That’s how it should be, and this community needs to get on board.
I tell Trouble, “Never would have expected that.” Trouble just neighs and says, “What is Marc Whitt all fidgety about?” I respond, “That’s the Glasser affect.”Trouble just grins and we continue, but I’m startled and say, “Hold on Trouble, here comes Debra Hoskins and Skip Daughtery walking side by side and laughing. Looks like they made up.”

Trouble just rolls his eyes; shakes his head back and forth and says, “Ain’t never gonna happen, Mr. Publisher, it was a nasty breakup.”This time I roll my eyes and tell him to move on like everybody else should. We continue down the parade route and I tell Trouble, “Now, look across the street on the steps of the courthouse. Wow, there is Judge/Executive Kent Clark, Phil Seyfrit and Berea Mayor Steve Connelly all dressed in their respective civil war uniforms. They are standing at attention and saluting us. Wonder what they are cooking up these days, could it be…?

Trouble says, “Who is that other fellow standing all alone in front of them trying to get our attention?”I reply, “Some rebel outcast named Billy Ray Hughes.” Trouble responds, “Oh yeah, I heard he is a real trouble maker in his own right, but he will never top you.”

“Now,” I said, “Look over towards the steps of City Hall, there is Mayor Jimmy Barnes and City Manager Jimmy Howard giving us two thumbs up. Is that the key to the city Mayor Barnes is holding?” Trouble responds, “Sure looks like it. It’s real shiny, is that real gold?”“Get real,” I reply, “It’s plastic. The city is in better shape; they’ve done a great job, but unfortunately not well enough to give us a solid-gold key. It’s not that we don’t deserve it; we do.”

I can see that Trouble is disappointed and starts to pout, and I respond, “Better than nothing my friend, so get over it because that’s just how it is!”We are now approaching the Bennett House where the parade route ends.Rita Smart is chilling out with some afternoon tea and waving frantically to get our attention.

I say to Trouble, “See, all the big guns came out just for you.” Trouble gives me a big grin and neighs; he is finally happy.Trouble says to me, “Who is sipping tea with Rita?” I respond, “That’s Ed Worley.Work a crowd in this evening gown from germanuniforms.”

Trouble gives a big neigh and replies, “We grilled him a few times didn’t we.” I quickly re

ply, “Yes we did and it was fun; he was well done when we got finished.”Once again Trouble grins, but makes an abrupt stop, takes a bow and then says, “OK, Mr. Publisher, it’s time to git’er done! Let’s really give them something to talk about.”

We turn around and head back down Main Street one last time.Trouble begins singing an all too familiar song, but one that is very much appropriate on this bittersweet day.

The Battle of Stoney Creek 200 years after

The Queen is not coming.

Neither is the prime minister.

And nobody is making a replica of the Stoney Creek monument out of 5,000 sugar cubes.

But that doesn't mean there won't be a party, no sir. And, if it's any consolation, Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina will be there.

The bicentennial of the Battle of Stoney Creek, which played a major role in our right to eat Timbits and yell "I am Canadian" on beer commercials, will be marked next month by four days of festivities and commemorative events.

To be fair, a queen wasn't really here for the first big wingding, the battle's centennial celebrations in 1913. (And Victoria Mary Augusta Louise Olga Pauline Claudine Agnes, as wife of the ruling George V, was actually queen consort.) But her participation in the battle's 100th birthday party on June 6, 1913, was a huge deal. (see page 16).

As an estimated 15,000 spectators stood in the rain at the base of the new Battlefield Monument, Queen Mary was 5,700 kilometres away in London (where it was probably also raining.) At the appointed hour, by means of a newfangled telegraphic cable remote control, her majesty pushed a button at Buckingham Palace and released the muslin shroud covering the crenellated base of the tower to the oohs and aahs of the soggy throng.

The 30.5-metre limestone monument to the dead of the Battle of Stoney Creek had been four years and $12,000 in the making and stands proudly at the site today, a lot older, but still a treasured landmark in the community where Canada's history was shaped.

Fifty years later, no less a luminary than "Mike," Canada's beloved prime minister Lester B. Pearson, stood on the site with the United States ambassador and talked about the 150-year record of peace between the two countries.

The 1963 event was a celebration of "a century and a half of close, active and mutually profitable co-operation," he said,Big halterweddingdresses and Fitness is a family owned shop serving the Helena area since 1986. acknowledging that "since 1815, we have had lots of rows, but rows without wars, or without a breach in our friendship."

It's said that 100,000 people showed up over four days that year to wave flags, eat hotdogs, listen to regimental bands, attend a church service, watch fireworks, squint upward at RCAF transports,Our chloehandbags range from on trend to classic styles. take photographs — and marvel over the painstaking handiwork of Adrian Vandenberg and John Spiegelaar.

But nobody seems to know what happened to it, not even Susan Ramsay, curator of Battlefield House Museum and Park National Historic Site. (Somebody was able to sweeten his daily coffee for about 14 years.)

Of greater concern to her at the moment, even if they don't involve a queen or prime minister, are plans for next month's anniversaries — the 200th of the battle and 100th of the monument.

The days will be filled with strolling minstrels, artillery demonstrations, period dancers, an 18th-century conjuror and other activities,2013 Collection germanarmyuniforms 1672 Styles. but the pinnacle of the celebrations will be the re-enactment of the actual battle, the 32nd annual and the longest-running War of 1812 re-enactment on the continent.

About 600 re-enactors are expected, all of them keen hobbyists and historians. And while the events are fun and sociable, these people aren't exactly playing.

"It's quite structured, with unit commanders who look at strategies, look at the site, to determine who's doing what," says Ramsay.

"And at the end, at the lament, men in the crowd stand up and take off their baseball caps and you know they realize it's not just a play, it's not the theatre, it's reality. It's what happened right there on that site,Sale cheap bridalgown online, white, black, berry, Graphite canada goose victoria parka hot sale. in their own back yard, and that this is sacred ground."

The re-enactments — there will be three over the weekend — are actually very exciting to watch, she says, "and when you get people excited, when you make them aware, I think you've met your goal."
