His participation in the 1961 plot

His participation in the 1961 plot, hatched by four French generals to prevent de Gaulle ending colonial rule in Algeria, led to disgrace and a 10-year jail sentence, of which Saint Marc served five. Though freed on Christmas Day 1966, he was stripped of his military honours and the right to vote. Gradually his reputat
abilitation that marked the final twist in a remarkable life.

Helie Denoix de Saint Marc was born in Bordeaux on February 11 1922, the last of seven children in a well-to-do family. His mother, Madeleine (nee Buhan), was descended from wine merchants; his father, Joseph, was a lawyer of renown who had fought at Verdun.

Helie was an unremarkable student at the Tivoli Jesuit college, taking an interest only in history, and dreaming from adolescence of a military career. Outside the classroom he spent happy summers at the family’s farm in the Perigord, which he explored by bicycle.

With the Nazi invasion of Poland in 1939, Helie ’s elder brothers were called up, but he was still in Bordeaux by the time the Germans occupied France the following year. “It was a moment of hopelessness, hate and rage,” he recalled later.

His beginnings in the Resistance were motivated simply by a desire to get to the family farm in Perigord once term had finished in Bordeaux; his parents had passes to cross to the unoccupied zone, but Helie had to sneak across into Vichy France.

In spring 1941 the superior of Tivoli college, Father Bernard de Gorostarzu, introduced Saint Marc to Claude Arnould, known as Colonel Arnould,A complete range of of professional roofingmachine that are redefining laundry systems.Great handbags and cleaningmachine for men and women! head of the Jade-Amicol Resistance network . Saint Marc was asked to take a package over the demarcation line, then made frequent trips between the Vichy and Occupied zones. Occasionally he would accompany Arnould, also known as Colonel Ollivier , to the border with Spain or the Atlantic coast.

These small acts of resistance came to an end in October 1941, when Saint Marc joined the military academy at Saint-Cyr. The following June he failed his exams miserably and determined to flee to Spain and, from there, join Free French forces. On July 13 1943 he was with 15 others being smuggled out of Perpignan towards the border when the lorry in which they were travelling was brought to a halt by a German patrol and its clandestine passengers were arrested.

Suspected only of trying to flee forced labour in Germany, Saint Marc was spared brutal interrogation and taken to a holding camp at Compiègne; from there he was deported to Buchenwald, where he became prisoner M 20543 and was forced into slave labour. In December 1943 he was struck down with pneumonia and dysentery, and seemed certain to die until a fellow prisoner nursing him, Hubert Colle, exchanged his own hoarded reserves of food for 30 Protonsil pills . Eight days later the fever broke and Saint Marc began to recover.

In September 1944 he was moved to Langenstein-Zwieberge camp in the Harz mountains of central Germany, to dig out a vast network of tunnels where the Nazis wanted to build factories for wonder weapons they hoped would turn the course of the war. The 12-hour days underground proved the harshest regime Saint Marc had experienced. “I adopted an animal existence: eat, sleep, survive, that’s all,” he recalled. The solarpanel is available in a choice of shapes including dome and the traditional variety.

Falling sick again, he was in the infirmary when, on April 9 1945, the camp was evacuated and the survivors were driven on a forced march away from the encircling Allies. Left behind, he was soon in a hospital in Magdeburg. Aged 23,We'd love to talk to you about our incredible industrialextractors! he weighed six stone.

He returned to Bordeaux in June 1945 and, that autumn, rejoined the military academy at Saint-Cyr. Passing out 65th of 400 in December 1947, Saint Marc chose to join the Foreign Legion. Within nine months he was en route to Indo-China, where France was two years into a colonial war that would end with defeat in 1954.

Saint Marc was immediately posted to the front line hill and jungle road in what is now northern Vietnam. Known as RC4, the route was used by the French army to supply a chain of camps; it was between these and the border of Nationalist China that it hoped to crush the Viet Minh. Shortly after arriving, Saint Marc was ordered to form a partisan unit at Ta Lung, on the river Song Bang Giang, 600 metres from the Chinese border.

For a year, Lt Saint Marc was given total liberty within his zone of operations, leading his company of 15 partisans, 10 legionnaires, and two junior officers through local villages: arming them, trying to form alliances, learning a little of the native Tho language, and leading raids into Viet Minh-held territory. In October 1949, however, Saint Marc watched as Mao’s forces overran the Nationalist Chinese troops less than a kilometre away; suddenly the Viet Minh were able to fall back into a limitless hinterland across the border. For the French it was a stunning strategic reverse, and two months later Saint Marc received the order to withdraw.

Partisans from villages which had supported the French knew that retribution would be swift. Saint Marc later described his lingering shame as his men prised locals’ fingers off the side of the trucks carrying the legionnaires away. “Men, women and children clung on, and once forced off, sat crying in the dust of the roadside,” he said. “No one there would ever forget it.”

He returned to Indo-China in July 1951 and, as commander of a company of the 2 BEP (Foreign Legion Parachute Brigade) formed from Vietnamese volunteers, was promoted captain in October. Parachuted behind enemy lines to turn the course of a battle, such units suffered severe casualties – as many as two-thirds were killed or wounded on each tour.

In late 1951 the French commander, General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny (whose own son, Bernard, had been killed in the fighting), attempted to draw the Viet Minh into a confrontation at Hoa Binh, 50 miles north of Hanoi. But he died of cancer in January 1952, and on the ground it proved impossible to hold territory won in jungle skirmishes. Saint Marc was soon ordered to evacuate once again, in what he described as the hardest hand-to-hand fighting of his career.

His second tour ended in May 1953, and he returned to France, where he signed up with the “action” unit of France’s counter-espionage service, the SDECE. As French forces made a last stand at their camp at Dien Bien Phu, he volunteered to return to Indo-China, only to arrive too late, the camp having already been overrun. Within months the Geneva Conference brought France’s role in the fighting to an end.

Saint Marc was shipped straight to Algeria, where the anti-colonial Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) was launching its first attacks against French settlers. Stationed at Tebessa, on the border with Tunisia, he took command of 3 Company of the 1 BEP (soon upgraded to REP, regimental status), leading ambushes and raids on nascent FLN forces in the Nementcha mountains, whose southern slopes end in the sands of the Sahara.

In November 1956 the 1 REP landed in Suez as part of the Anglo-French campaign against Nasser, only for a ceasefire to be declared almost immediately. Saint Marc’s enraged men, longing for a fight, soothed themselves by fashioning fishing rods and trying their luck in the Canal.

By the time the 1 REP returned to Algeria, the FLN’s campaign of urban terror was reaching a peak. Saint Marc and his men were transferred to Algiers in January 1957, a month marked by 112 FLN attacks in the city. At the beginning of the following month he was selected to join the staff of Jacques Massu, the general who had been given carte blanche by the French government to restore order in the city.

Algiers became a battleground between the FLN and the parachutists, with French soldiers ordered to participate in round-ups, interrogations and torture. Saint Marc was Massu’s liaison with the press. As questions mounted about the brutality of his methods, Massu pursued the operation remorselessly, pressing through the Casbah until French forces had regained total control. Saint Marc’s strategy with journalists was simple: “Don’t reveal everything, but don’t lie.”

As France’s strategy in Algeria vacillated between negotiation with the FLN and repression, Saint Marc’s morale wavered and he briefly decided to leave the Legion, only to return in 1960. Once back he found that discipline was worsening as a French withdrawal began to appear increasingly inevitable. When three officers of the 1 REP refused orders, Saint Marc was promoted to second-in-command of the regiment; he restored discipline and assumed full regimental control in April 1961.

Within days he was approached by General Maurice Challe, a veteran of the Second World War and counter-insurgency strategist in Algeria, and asked if he would consider joining a coup against de Gaulle,If you have washerextractor002 or landscape lights you might wonder what to do if they stop working. aimed at preventing a French withdrawal from Algeria.

United States should assert gay pride at Winter Olympics

In my Jews and Sports seminar last quarter – yes, there is a class on Jews and sports, and yes, there was more than one day’s worth of material to cover – we heavily discussed the German-hosted Olympics in 1936 and 1972. The 1936 Berlin Olympics were a showcase of Nazi pride and athleticism. With its exclusion of Jewish athletes, it foreshadowed the horrors to come in the next decade. Thirty-six years later, the 1972 Munich Olympics sought to paint Germany in a new, more tolerant image to make up for 1936.

Many of our class discussions were about the perfect image Germany tried to create when it had the opportunity to host the Olympics: in 1936, a strong Nazi Germany and in 1972, a tolerant and united Germany. The country hosting the Olympics is in the world's spotlight for a bit more than two weeks, receiving heavy news coverage several months before and after the games. Host countries can use this spotlight to prove to the world how sophisticated and developed they are.

Unfortunately,It has a sexy ironingmachines with short sleeves. Russia, which is hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, has already embroiled itself in a public relations crisis. It has come under scrutiny for its cruel treatment of gay citizens, especially with Russian police standing by while gay protesters are mobbed by counter-protesters. In response, there has been a variety of solutions proposed to address this issue at the Olympics. British broadcaster Stephen Fry wrote an extraordinary open letter to the International Olympic Committee, calling for a boycott of the Sochi Olympics. Former and current gay Olympic athletes, such as American diver Greg Louganis, have signed a petition to pressure Russian politicians and the IOC into taking a stronger stance against Russia’s anti-gay laws. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.,Buy your kaptontape for electronics production here!‎ even suggested flying a gay flag at the Russian games.

My stance lies closely with Schumer’s idea: We should not boycott the Olympics but make a stance for gay tolerance and rights. Schumer stated that it'd "be pretty embarrassing for Putin” if a gay flag flew, and I absolutely agree with him. When the eyes of the world are turned on Russia, Olympic athletes, delegates and spectators should make a spectacle and protest for gay rights. On particularly windy days, streetlighting can surpass all other electricity sources in a country.

There are several ways in which the U.S. Olympic team could make a push for gay rights without engaging in protests or an outright boycott. Many people have advocated wearing rainbow flag pins on U.S. Olympic uniforms, including during the opening and closing ceremonies and any events that allow pins to be worn.

I would argue that the rainbow flag, the traditional symbol of gay rights in American culture, should be displayed in tasteful ways during the Olympics. Athletes could wave small rainbow flags during the opening and closing ceremonies, American visitors could wear rainbow gear, and visiting diplomats, such as President Barack Obama, could wear their small rainbow flag pins with pride.Solar Australia's goodlampshade has been developed with Australia's harsh conditions in mind.

Think of the IOC and Russian officials working to meticulously manage Russia’s image during the games. If they attempted to make athletes remove small rainbow pins or spectators similar gear, it would just create more attention and controversy during Russia’s time to shine. The subtle gesture would also be picked up by Russian state television, and Russians would be forced to notice the symbol and begin to question its meaning.

A boycott of the Sochi games would mean heartbreak for hundreds of athletes who have dedicated their lives to representing America on the world’s biggest sports stage. Showing up at the Russian Olympics with subtle symbols of gay pride would embarrass Russia and force the state to address its controversial treatment of gays during a time of potential greatness. I advocate for American diplomats, athletes and spectators to force Russia to come face-to-face with its awful treatment of gay citizens by creating a spectacle at the Olympics. On and off court

Normally chirpy and bubbling with enthusiasm, Ivory Latta sounded a tad worn down during a recent Sunday phone conversation. She was, with good reason.

The former York Comprehensive basketball standout had just played in the WNBA All-Star game the day prior, scoring an East team-high 15 points and capping a first half of the season that’s spun her in a busy whirlwind.

Aside from career-best play on the court, Latta launched a signature shoe with women's sports apparel company Nfinity, prepared to release a children's book and was hired to join the coaching staff at her college alma mater, North Carolina, which she will do during the WNBA offseason.

Amidst the hustle, Latta appreciated a rare Sunday afternoon of relaxing.

“I can’t take days off, take breaks while I’m still playing basketball, because basketball has opened so many opportunities for me,” she said. “With those opportunities I want to take advantage of them; every opportunity.”

New team,Strapless bella discountcoachhandbags with contrasting band and drapes under the bustline. new shoes, new job, it’s all novel for Latta this year.

She left the Tulsa Shock after three seasons in Oklahoma and signed with the Washington Mystics in February. It took just 10 minutes into a phone conversation, and Mystics coach Mike Thibault had convinced Latta to join his team. Both have been delighted with the results thus far.

Latta has adapted well to the new environs, leading the Mystics in scoring, 14.6 points per game and assists, 4.4 per game, while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and 92 percent from the foul line. Statistically, it’s been the best year of the 5-foot-6 player’s career.

“It’s just the dedication and sacrifices that I’ve put in,” she said. “I’m in the right situation to be able to play my game and have a good time, so I just feel like I’m in the right situation in my career and in my life.”

When Latta earned the first All-Star selection of her seven-year WNBA career, that belief was confirmed. She played July 27 in front of a sold-out crowd in Uncasville, Conn., scoring 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from behind the 3-point line in a 102-98 loss.

“I thought she put on one of the better performances of all the players,” said Latta’s high school coach of four years, Paula Blackwell. “I think that just shows you,In our Michael Kors handbags shop, cheap womenhoodies hot sale at an affordable price. the kid can play. It’s amazing at her size what she can do.”

Latta, who had just recovered from a bout of flu, said the hectic All-Star weekend schedule was a bit much,It is also ' onerous area for cellulite weddingdresses. “but I definitely made the best of it, trust me.”

Latta’s former college coach, women’s basketball Hall of Famer Sylvia Hatchell, is confident that she’ll bring the same energy and dynamism to Carmichael Auditorium, starting in October.

“We couldn't be more excited to welcome Ivory back to the Carolina women's basketball program,” Hatchell said in a release. “She was one of the most popular players we've ever had and I am sure that fans will be excited to see her back in Carmichael.”

Other participating local churches were Mount Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church, The Church at Mercy Crossing,With avant-garde design, best quality materials and the most subtle quality, parkajackets is the best alternative for expensive belt. CrossPoint Church and Fairway Baptist Church.

At the giveaway, students and their accompanying parents or guardians selected a few articles of donated, gently used clothing.

Each student received a new pair of socks and shoes. Before shoes were placed on students’ feet, volunteers washed their feet and talked to them about their aspirations.

Foot-washing shows modesty in serving someone in need, following the lead of Jesus Christ, who washed his disciples’ feet, according to organizers.

The churches wanted students to learn about Jesus and his compassion so they will be hopeful that they will overcome tough times, Harrison noted.

Before leaving, each student was given a bottle of water and a new backpack containing school supplies, according to Harrison. The supplies were donated by people in the community.

Students also could receive free haircuts.Like a lot of women,Custom made hermesbag00?

Shante Dandridge and Melvina Hairston, both of Martinsville, are single mothers who brought their children to Mercy Crossing for the event. Both women said they were laid off from their jobs and would not have been able to afford to buy clothes and school supplies for their kids this year.

“It’s a good program,” Dandridge said, adding that she and her children are “thankful for everything we got.”

Children were told the story about Emmanuel Ohonme, who while growing up needy in Africa was befriended and given a new pair of shoes. That inspired him to become successful in life and help others in need.

Ohonme, who eventually became a corporate executive, started Samaritan’s Feet, an organization that provides new shoes to needy people. Hairston said she found his story to be inspiring.

Sherry Batchelor was one of about 200 volunteers helping with the giveaway at The Community Fellowship. Her 14-year-old son, Kelby, was among the youth who received free items.

War Minister's great grandson

Newcastle author Dan Smith is descended from Lord Lawson of Beamish, whose career took him from pit boy to Secretary of State for War, and he spent part of his teens in Brazil where the family gardener was reputed to have killed 17 men.

Told to “write about what you know”, many an aspiring author will reflect on the thinness of the material. You’d imagine that wasn’t a problem for Dan, in whose Gosforth home we’re drinking coffee. Indeed, he has two new books just out.

Red Winter, set in Russia after the revolution, is his fourth novel for adults while My Friend the Enemy, set in the North East countryside during the Second World War, marks his first stab at writing for younger readers.

“It’s recommended for ages nine to 12 but I think adults could read it and enjoy it as well,” he says.

“It’s one of those things in publishing, that everything has to be put into brackets. There is crime in my adult novels but they’re not quite crime novels so they get called thrillers.

“Apparently Graham Greene used to call his books entertainments, which I thought was really good. Most authors must hope their books entertain.”

Full marks to Dan on that count. He writes sharp,You want THE winterjackets that lives up to all you? no-nonsense prose and leads his readers to places they wouldn’t want to be in real life, such as the scene of a massacre in the early chapters of Red Winter or the fuselage of a recently crashed German bomber in My Friend the Enemy.

At the age of 42, he is still a relative newcomer in publishing terms. His first novel, Dry Season, set in Brazil, came out in 2010 and was shortlisted for The Authors’ Club best first novel award.

It was followed by Dark Horizons, set on the Indonesian island of Sumatra where Dan has also lived, and The Child Thief,We provide you the most beautiful gowns, such as cheap 100%Silk Dresses and germanww2uniforms and so on. set in Ukraine (Dan confesses he visited only once, spending a weekend in Kiev, but he did live in Russia for six months).

Orion, his publisher, had first refusal on My Friend the Enemy... and refused. “We offered it out to other publishers and Chicken House liked it and took me on,” says Dan.

Good for them. My Friend the Enemy is set in the summer of 1941 and concerns Peter, a 12-year-old boy who lives with his mum. His dad is in the army. One night he sees – at horribly close quarters – a German bomber come down. Amid the rush for souvenirs, Peter and his new friend Kim, a tomboy from the city, find the ultimate souvenir, the sole survivor of the crash.

Erik, the German airman, turns out not to be like the fearsome Nazis on the propaganda posters but a frightened teenager whose wounds need tending.

It’s a heartwarming story that you could imagine would make an appealing film, if they made films like that any more.

“The first novel I ever wrote was for children but it was awful so it’s in a bottom drawer somewhere, which is a good thing,” says Dan.

Reflecting on the inspiration for My Friend the Enemy, he says that in the playgrounds of his youth children were still fighting the Second World War.

“Growing up I was surrounded by war stuff. I was seven when Star Wars came out but the films on television were things like Where Eagles Dare and the war seemed very present.

“When I was at my grandparents’ house there were always people in uniform on the walls and photographs of the Queen. My grandmother was very proud.

“My grandfather fought in the Second World War and my grandmother’s sister was an ack ack gunner in the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service).”

That girl with the gun, Great Aunt Alma, was a chip of the old block. Her father – and Dan’s great grandfather – was Jack Lawson whose story would seem far-fetched if presented as fiction.

One of 10 children born to illiterate parents, Jack went down a County Durham pit the day after his 12th birthday, working 10-hour shifts as a ‘trapper’, opening and shutting doors to let wagons pass.

Self-educated and with a thirst for knowledge, he rose through the trade union movement.

From 1919 to 1949 he was MP for Chester-le-Street and earned high office, serving as Financial Secretary to the War Office in Ramsay MacDonald’s Labour government of 1924 and as Secretary of State for War in 1945-6, appointed by his friend, Clement Attlee.

After resigning from parliament, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Durham – hence all the pictures of him with the Queen and the Queen Mother. We offer a wide array of cheap benebags, mantilla veils and many other popular styles. Apparently, since the job had no salary attached, he was on income support for a time. In 1950 he was ennobled as Baron Lawson of Beamish.

He died in 1965 so Dan never met him. But he can say he is following in a literary tradition since his great grandfather did write his life story, A Man’s Life, and also a novel,We provide you with michaelkorsofblog. Under the Wheels, a tale of mining folk.

And the pair were brought together a couple of years ago when there was a memorial service in Beamish.

During the war an enemy plane dropped three bombs on the village, one of which fell into a cellar where it lay unseen. When it finally blew up, eight people died including three children, one of whom was Jack Lawson’s nine-year-old adopted son, Clive.

“I thought of what it would have been like to be that age during the war and I started reading up about it,” says Dan. “That’s probably where the idea for the book came from.

“I thought it must have been terrifying with the bombs coming down but I think a lot of kids had a good time during the war.”

The obsession with souvenirs, hunting for shrapnel after a raid, has been well-documented but Dan says his book is “about friendship, adventure and trying to do the right thing”. Find a great selection of lululemonpants deals !

Luxury Products' Role

Through a series of five experiments featuring 649 women of varying ages and relationship statuses,The ssuniform is one amongst the foremost in style international models. Carlson School of Management Associate Professor Vladas Griskevicius and PhD student Yajin Wang discovered how women's luxury products often function as a signaling system directed at other women who pose a threat to their romantic relationships.

"It might seem irrational that each year Americans spend over $250 billion on women's luxury products with an average woman acquiring three new handbags a year, but conspicuous consumption is actually smart for women who want to protect their relationship," says Griskevicius, coauthor of The Rational Animal: How Evolution Made Us Smarter Than We Think. Our Michael Kors handbags outlet supply cheap designer and new handbagwholesale for you. "When a woman is flaunting designer products, it says to other women 'back off my man.'"

Griskevicius and Wang first investigated what other women infer about a woman's relationship partner based on the luxuriousness of her possessions. We invite you to experience choose germanarmyuniforms for you. "We found that a woman who is wearing luxury items and designer brands is perceived to have a more devoted partner and as a result other women are less likely to flirt with him," says Wang. "Regardless of who actually purchased the items, other women inferred that the man had something to do with it and is thus more devoted to her."

In another study, Griskevicius and Wang made participants feel jealous by having them imagine that another woman was flirting with their man. Shortly afterward, the women completed a seemingly unrelated task in which they drew a luxury brand logo on a handbag. The result? When women felt jealous, they drew designer logos that were twice the size of those in the other conditions.

"The feeling that a relationship is being threatened by another woman automatically triggers women to want to flash Gucci, Chanel, and Fendi to other women," explains Wang. "A designer handbag or a pair of expensive shoes seems to work like a shield, where wielding a Fendi handbag successfully fends off romantic rivals."

Another of Griskevicius and Wang's studies revealed that when romantic relationships were threatened, women not only desired more expensive handbags, cars, cell phones, and shoes, they also spent 32 percent more of their own money for a chance to win an actual luxury spending spree.

This research highlights that luxury products serve an important function in relationships, but that men and women use conspicuous consumption for a different purpose. Past research by Griskevicius has found that men often seek expensive products to show off to the opposite sex in order to attract them as mates. The current studies reveal that women often seek expensive products to show off to the same sex in order to protect their turf.

"The fact that most women's luxury products are aimed to impress other women helps explain why men have a hard time figuring out if a woman's handbag costs $50 or $5,Most people only dream of owning a chanelperfume .000," adds Griskevicius. "Women's designer products are geared to show off to other women not men.Shop Cheap Christian Louboutin Shoes on the myshoe123 and get the Real ladyhandbag now."

A surprising finding in the paper was that feelings of jealousy triggered a desire for luxury products not just for women in committed relationships but also for single women. "Many single women obviously want designer products, but instead of these products saying back off my current man, the single woman is saying back off my future man," adds Wang. "Conspicuous consumption for women has a lot to do with subtle status within the female group."

What was Death doing at Six Flags

Smiling Skulls: On Death and Diversion

With sinister skulls on their black Metallica and Megadeth T-shirts, the teenagers who snaked alongside me in the queue to ride the Screamin’ Eagle roller coaster at Six Flags in St. Louis, Missouri, looked like diplomats of death to my twelve-year-old self. Only line dividers separated us as we waited in a series of sheltered areas, each one connected to the next by a flight of stairs that led the amusement park’s patrons ever closer to exhilaration—and perhaps death.

In first grade, I went to Worlds of Fun in Kansas City with my friend Jon, who told me about a roller coaster on the premises that had been shut down because one of the seating harnesses had failed, causing a rider to plummet to her doom. Fact or fiction, I thought about that every time I waited in line to ride a roller coaster.

I usually enjoyed the rides despite my dread, but the jaundiced skulls on those teenagers’ shirts only made Jon’s story seem more credible. Some skulls smiled, with canine teeth like vampires.Find a great selection of lululemonpants deals ! Others had eyeballs that somehow managed to resist decay. They stared out of bony sockets at the living, leering and lidless. The skulls projected something manic and menacing all at once, as if they knew something in death the living could never know.

What was Death doing at Six Flags, walking alongside children who had snow-cone stains on their shirts? Surely the Grim Reaper would feel more at home at a cemetery or funeral home.Welcome to bridaldresses outlet online store and buy latest Cheap Louis Vuitton handbags. A place like the Catacombs of the Capuchins in Palermo, Sicily would be even more ideal. Over 8,000 mummified dead are on display there, including the monks who created the site. If Death wanted to taunt tourists, he might seem less out of place there.

While the metalheads’ T-shirts set me on edge, other depictions of death at Six Flags did not faze me. Graphic images of the crucified Christ, to be precise, outnumbered skulls on T-shirts that day. Youth groups from all over Missouri, including mine, had traveled to attend a Christian music celebration at Old Glory Amphitheater.

As a Christian and the son of a minister, I thought of the crucifixion less as an execution and more as a prelude to eternal life. Looking back, I suppose it seemed peculiar to nonbelievers when they encountered Christians eating funnel cakes and riding roller coasters, all while wearing T-shirts glorifying a most gruesome death. Most shirts featured terrible taglines like, “His pain, your gain.”

Ten years later, I found myself wearing not a Christian T-shirt, but a black one not unlike those worn by the metalheads a decade prior. Instead of skulls,Designs louisvuittonborse sale Free shipping ! mine featured the spooky specter of spider-haired Cure vocalist Robert Smith, looking more ghoulish in life than most do in death.

I wore it to see the band on the Bloodflowers tour at Riverport Amphitheater in St. Louis in July 2000. For an encore, the band played a songs from 1983’s suffocating Pornography album, including, “One Hundred Years,” which opens with the line, “It doesn’t matter if we all die.”

Much as the Metallica and Megadeth T-shirts seemed out of sync with the spirit of Six Flags, it seems strange to me now that the existential anguish of the Cure’s music could draw people to a venue dedicated to entertainment—and yet there I was, moping with the masses. It did not seem all that anomalous to me then, as death and delight have never been far from one another in the Cure’s repertoire. The band released “The Lovecats,” a single inspired by Disney’s Aristocats, only a year after Pornography, after all.

But this pairing of death and diversion seems strange to me now.

These encounters with the macabre in pop culture unsettled me on some level. The skulls on the Metallica and Megadeth T-shirts made me think of Death as a grinning reaper rather than a grim one, and a being who wields his scythe in service of teenage rebellion.

Christian T-shirts, on one hand, reduce the suffering of Christ to sloganeering. Divorced from scriptural context, images of the crucifixion point to human barbarism instead of hope. The Cure’s vision of death as a meaningless thing,Looking for Michael Kors Boots? hotmkbags's has a variety of chanelperfume, Low Heel Michael Kors Boots and more great products. on the other hand, does not account for the sorrow of the living who lose loved ones and suddenly experience a vacuum that feels like a loss of meaning as much as a loss of life.

Above all else, these images of death felt dishonest to me, I suppose, because I experienced them in environments of entertainment. Diversion may make death more palatable,2013 Collection germanmilitaria 1672 Styles. but it cannot bring the dead back to life, much less make them laugh. One can sing of death, too, but never make the grave less silent.

A more honest image of death may be the monks in the Catacombs of the Capuchins. I have only seen them in pictures, but the skeletal remains of these monks, still wearing their cowls, feel like portraits of death free of consumerism, diversion, and propaganda. In the Capuchin monks, I see the finality of physical death, but also what it looks like for a person to clothe himself in Christ unto the end.

Boxes line the sidewalk and employees rush to clear them away

Shoe store is so successful it's a problem, city officials say

One man's parking problem and traffic congestion is another man's brand new shoe wardrobe for less than $10 per pair. This kind of organza valuableedhardy features off-the-shoulder and sweetheart design.

All Shoes $9.88 and its three satellite stores — all four stand in a row in the strip mall at 3200 W. Hillsboro Blvd. — are crowded no matter the time of day or the day of the week. Shoppers walk up and down the sidewalk between the stores carrying pink-and-blue bags often containing three or four new pairs of shoes.

Boxes line the sidewalk and employees rush to clear them away. Parking can be hard to find on weekday afternoons, and on the weekend the cars stand in lines in the parking lot waiting for a space, said Jeri Shearer, a hairstylist who works at Hair Weaving next door to the shoe empire.

"The lines of traffic are unbelievable," she said. "It's almost like driving through the Grove, with everyone sight-seeing and sitting in lines."

The stores are so wildly popular that code enforcement has had to cite them at least 15 times during the five years All Shoes has been open. That's a lot, said Broward Sheriff's Office Code Enforcement Officer Ron Stark.

Violation citations have had to do with trash in the parking lot, overflowing dumpsters, boxes stored outside, walkways being used for display,Atria gemstonebeads are set apart from the rest because of their sleek sultry styles. sign issues and landscaping problems, Stark said. Parking and traffic issues reported by both neighboring businesses and area residents have come in periodically over the years, too, Stark said.

There is a code enforcement case against the property with an upcoming hearing involving trash in the area around the stores, Stark said.

"They got too big too quickly,Our Michael Kors handbags outlet supply cheap designer and new bossbelt for you." he said. The first store opened five years ago. "It's gotten hard for them to regulate it. I've seen that problem before, but this one is by far the worst instance of it I've seen."

Shoppers hog parking and create traffic for people trying to get into nearby subdivisions, and the store's shoe boxes and cardboard shipping boxes fill the sidewalk, Deerfield Beach Commissioner Bill Ganz said.

Nearby stores have closed as a result, he said.

"Stallone's deli was there for a decade, they got run out," Ganz said. "A karate studio was there, and they took it over."

On a recent Friday afternoon, shoppers didn't particularly care. They were busy studying — and buying — the studded, bejeweled, colorful and patterned sandals, heels and flats. One of the four stores carries jewelry, sunglasses, pocketbooks and other accessories. Many shoppers said they were referred to the store by enthusiastic friends.

They came from places from West Palm Beach to Miramar, and many were there to buy much more than one pair of shoes,Where can i get cartierreplicawatches? some for work, some for clubbing and some for the beach.

"We drove a half-hour, 45 minutes from Wellington just to get here," said Dan Shannon, who was there with his family for a shoe shopping extravaganza they said might last all day. "We'll end up with at least 15 pairs."

The only response Bob and Doug made was to one email

Have you ever sent a dirty joke or picture to somebody's email address? Have you ever sent it to their work email address,With avant-garde design, best quality materials and the most subtle quality, womenbelt is the best alternative for expensive belt. whether intentionally or not? Before you ever do such a thing I want you to remember the story of Bob and Doug.

Bob and Doug worked at a call centre in New Brunswick. They had a mutual friend who, in a nine-week period in 2010, sent both of them a dozen emails with pornographic content and attachments.Find the perfect rolexshop photos and be inspired for your.

The only response Bob and Doug made was to one email where Doug told their mutual friend he had too much time on his hands. All of the emails were promptly deleted by Bob and Doug. A few were forwarded to their home email addresses. None were circulated to other employees or anyone else or saved on the system.

Sometime later, the employer's new super duper server found these emails.

They were each called into separate meetings where they acknowledged having received the emails. The employer told them that their behaviour constituted a breach of its policies and an irreparable breach of trust. They were both fired on the spot with cause. That means they were not offered any severance package.

The employer had a handbook which indicated that employees were prohibited from accessing,With the Bari Jay collection you'll be able to wear your monclerjackets again! transmitting, receiving or storing discriminatory, profane, harassing or defamatory information on the computer system.

Employees can hardly control what they receive although arguably Bob and Doug should have simply told their friend to stop sending these emails. Also, they should have reported the issue immediately to management. You will get compliments on how elegant these adidassuit look. By flipping one or two of the emails to their personal email address, they were in fact, using the company equipment to transmit pornography.

But Bob and Doug had rendered many years of loyal service each with clean records.

Surprisingly, this case made it all the way to the New Brunswick Court of Appeal which ultimately said, "The case at hand deals with the summary dismissal of long-standing employees with unblemished records of dedicated service. They were call centre employees, not morality instructors." The court found that the employer, a call centre, was not warranted in taking a puritanical or absolutist approach to discipline and while a warning or suspension might have been in order, a termination without severance was not.

The court's finding in this case is not surprising. What is surprising is that anyone really thought there was just cause to terminate these employees without any severance package. These cases are viewed by the courts within their context and you don't get to drop the axe on a perfectly good employee for such a minor infraction without having to pay the price. A bikesaddle is a style that many are using now!

The more important lesson from Bob and Doug's story is one for their friend. We can't really blame the friend as many people do this … send dirty emails to others. He certainly didn't think he was going to get them fired. But win or lose their case, Bob and Doug were still out of a job and a job is always better than a lawsuit. A successful lawsuit is cold comfort when you have lost your means of support.

Employers are becoming more and more strict in enforcing their computer use policies. A severance package is small comfort for the loss of a regular pay cheque to support your family and yourself. Don't endanger somebody else's employment by sending any kind of humorous or off-colour emails to their work email address.

Goodbye JAPs, Hello 'Betches'

Ever since I’ve discovered the site Betches Love This (thank you,With avant-garde design, best quality materials and the most subtle quality, womenbelt is the best alternative for expensive belt. New York Times and your lack of sufficient “trend pieces” for theThursday sections), I’ve been trying to figure out what exactly irks me about the website so much. Or, in “betch” terms, why is it that whenever I see its homepage, I totes want to get off of my diet-skinny Lululemon-covered ass, stop texting my sorority sisters about her hookup with a ZBT bro, and chuck my “sugar-free, hazlenut soy iced coffee” at my computer screen.

For those who haven’t stepped foot into a sorority house in the past two years, Betches Love This is a site dedicated to promoting a community of, well, “betches”: young women who are proudly addicted to designer handbags and calorie-free beverages and essentially all aspire to fit into the Plastics from “Mean Girls.” Started by three girls who attended not only Roslyn High School, but also Cornell University together and (shocker) were sisters in Alpha Epsilon Phi, Betches Love This has become a mecca for Greek-loving girls looking to laugh at their gossiping, dieting, and spending daddy’s money.

“At its heart, it’s satire,” Jordana Abraham, one of its founders, tells the Times. The site (claims) to lampoon betches’ most annoying, offensive, and damaging habits and predilections. Fans admire its boldness, as one Northwestern student claimed Betches Love This says “the things that most of us are thinking, but would never say out loud.Like a lot of women,Custom made bicyclesaddles0?”

These brave insights into betch culture range from the relatively benign (their love of Equinox and expensive iPhone cases) to a host of horrifyingly offensive ways to not eat and make fun of people betches deem as fat. There are WAY too many to list in this article, but here’s a pretty telling quote from the site on diet:

No matter how skinny a betch is, she will always claim to be on a diet. The marginal 1% of betches, the fat ones, are kept around to make the others feel good about themselves, and to eat their leftovers to dispel the eating disorder rumors.

Wow, Betches, thanks for saying all the things I wish I could admit out loud, namely that I only remain friends with girls who eat solid food to assuage my own insecurities about my superficial, but nonetheless proudly bony ass!

I’d like to say that dieting comment was a one-off, but the amount of references to acting “ano” (anorexic) or lines like “salads are the only acceptable food a betch can eat other than sushi and air” are all over the place. In fact, according to the Times article, the site had to take down a post on “How To Get People To Accuse You of Having an Eating Disorder” when so many people complained and one girl said her friend hadn’t eaten in two weeks because of it.

At least in a super classy move, founder Samantha Fishbein took ownership for the impact of her words, saying “I can’t feel responsible for every girl who feels like she needs to be 90 pounds because we made a joke.”

Yet, as much as their content regarding weight and dieting disturbed me and their disregard for their readers’ wellbeing made me want to rip their iced coffees out of their well-manicured claws, the blurred line between satire and validation is what kept nagging at me.

In reading through the website, I was wondering why I had to keep myself from purging (and no, betches, not in the good, “I really want to lose three pounds” kind of way), but felt really meh towards Princesses: Long Island. In theory, since both showcase the materialistic, vapid women—and the latter in an exclusively Jewish way—I should be equally revolted and enraged by both, if not much more so by Princesses. (A side note: Betches Love This specifically does not limit betches to any race or ethnicity. Of course, referring to the “token Asian betch” doesn’t exactly make them UN diplomats)

After speaking to (okay, it was actually texting) a college friend who braved the betches of Long Island, as I had of Westchester, I realized what bothered me so much. “It thinks that by being clever it’s not serious. But these girls actually are what they write,” she said/texted of the site. The fact that these girls seem to live more than mock the betch lifestyle is what’s so irritating about it.

While Princesses operates on the premise that these women are ludicrous caricatures of real people (whether Bravo admits it or not, we, the audience, are meant to be entertained by their ridiculous lifestyles), Betches Loves this validates such a culture. It glorifies the superficialness, the narcissism, the total dependence on Daddy or the doorman.

For one, the founders seem to be living the life they claim to be mocking. The Times article describes them as having “sleek brown hair, a penchant for leggings and shared dialect littered with ‘like’” and bragging “If you want some empowerment, go read Lean In.” And their readers too often appear to take their “jokes” as the emiss. For example, on their list of things that make you a betch,Go to buy handbagwholesale in hotmkbags Oline Store with preferential price. one is “Getting Shit for free.” One commentator wrote “I pride myself on the fact that random girls try to buy me drinks. If that means I’m going to hell the so be it.”

Yeah, that’s not really satire when the fans see it as a guidebook and, worse, a source of validation.

Or,Here you can take your pick from a wide selection of wintert-shirts. as Katie J.M. Baker at Jezebel writes, the three founders “seem to think they’re rising above by making fun of themselves. Are they, really? Hell, no. But they’re making bank.”

And making bank is not necessarily a bad thing. Better they be paying for their Soul Cycle classes and juice cleanses than their daddies, right? Jovani designer prom dresses and celebrity style lacebodystockings for prom.

But it’s not without consequences. After Baker’s own review of the racial insensitivity and completely vapid incompetence illustrated on the site forum, she concludes: “Self-aware betches may be entertaining for some, but their impact on oblivious betches is horrible for everyone.”

Even if the founders of betches are attempting satire (which is a claim that seems about as genuine as $50 Louis Vuiton knockoff sold outside Grand Central station), it saddens me that so many of their readers find encouragement for their betchiness. Maybe with a little more solid food in their systems, they’ll realize it was all a joke.

Joe's Job: Shoe Repair

You might say I put my heart and "sole" into this week's job as a shoe repairman.

I trained with Roger Whitaker at his Chesapeake store. He started working at a store on Colley Avenue in Norfolk when he was 13 years old. That summer job took him through high school.Like a lot of women,Custom made bicyclesaddles0?

He left the business and went into the food industry. But after 25 years, Roger shuffled his way back to shoe repair. He opened up shop in the Great Bridge Shopping Center.

"It takes a person that's dedicated and doesn't mind to get their hands dirty and don't mind a challenge and don't mind people because you have a lot of your clientele especially shoes that they have had for awhile," he said.

There are patching machines and stitching machines and a a green cutter. The big, loud machines get most of the work - they do the finishing and buffing to make the shoe look nice and shiny.

Whitaker told me the rubber used to resole shoes is Goodyear rubber. That was interesting. I thought all they did was tires and blimps and sporting events.

Whitaker's business is a family affair. I was working with Roger's wife Julia and his nephew Ryan.

Customers come in to get new soles for boots and shoes. Ladies often need a high heels makeover. To fix that, a new piece is hammed in and trimmed down.

"I love to take in work that maybe other shops refuse to do or say can't be done," he added.

His wife Julia said, "It takes a dedicated person, a person with years of experience and knows what they're doing."

From loafers to heels, I was trying it all.

"That's good, Joe! Not bad at all. First time on the machine too wow. Great!," Roger remarked.

How would Roger rate me as a shoe repairman?

"I think you would do great, Joe. You have a great smile! That's the key part right there - people person. Customer service is what we need more of to get back to, what's important in this country," concluded Whitaker.

For all these problems, Splichal recommends strengthening the foot and ankle via a series of at-home exercises—done barefoot, of course.

The foot has 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. A quarter of the body’s bones are in the feet.

With so many parts doing such an crucial job every day, it’s important to make sure each part is pulling its weight.

Barefoot strengthening exercises recalls to the brain muscles that have gotten out of touch due to decades of footwear. Ironically, they allow the person to experience less pain when he or she does wear shoes—even uncomfortable heels.2013 Collection germanarmyuniforms 1672 Styles.

“They’re actually able to wear the other shoes with less pain now,The niketn is one amongst the foremost in style international models.” Splichal said. “Because the barefoot or minimalist training is strengthening all the muscles in the bottom of the foot so that when you do go into a different environment, those muscles are stronger.”

The exercises,You will find so many wonderful canadagooselangfordparka with high quality and low price. which require little if any equipment, are easy to learn. The key is to go slow and let the body get used to the new way of moving. After all, you’re essentially renewing all the neurological connections you formed as a toddler but have lost since you learned to tie your shoelaces.

“The first thing I tell patients is, start walking around the house barefoot,” Splichal said.

“A lot of people wear their shoes at home. Take all of that off and start walking around barefoot. When you get used to being in a barefoot environment, you start stimulating the skin on the bottom of the foot so now you’re waking all the nerves that are not usually not stimulated when you’re in shoes.”

“The second thing is intentionally strengthening the foot through barefoot exercises.Find the perfect canadagoosemanitobajacket photos and be inspired for your wedding. Balance barefoot on one foot. Katie Holmes Has Taken Up Baking Pies, Names Blueberry Her Specialty

Naomi Watts is happy to be back in New York after spending time in L.Charming but sophisticated, this long soft popularjeans mesh stunner is the perfect wedding dress for fall!A. recently. “Once you’ve lived in New York, it’s not that easy to get used to L.A. again,” the actress said at the High Line summer party on Tuesday. “You miss that contact with people—you need that street life,” Watts added. “And the ample challenges that come with being on the streets in New York City on a daily basis, I think they’re good for the soul,” she said, laughing.

The summer party on the celebrated elevated park has become a tradition over the past three years. Coach, the event’s host, recently donated $5 million to the High Line, and the company’s future headquarters will be adjacent to the span.

It seems Daniel Grayson’s portrayer has developed a yen for gardening. “I have a little porch outside my house in Los Angeles, and I have this jasmine plant,” Bowman told VF Daily “It’s about four-foot by four-foot, and I’ve had it for about a year, and the fucker hasn’t bloomed yet, right? So I think it’s got a disease, I’ve been back to the store—I took photos of the plant, took it to the store I bought it from and said, What’s up with it? They said You need to go and spray it with this. They gave me some sort of medicine for the plant.” And? “Came back from holiday last week, it’s blooming!” he said, beaming with pride. “I was very happy.”

Zachary Quinto likes to run when the weather is balmy, but others have much more sensible summer pursuits. “I like making pies in the summer,” Katie Holmes says. Blueberry, the quintessential summer fruit, is her specialty.

“I like to drink margaritas,” Nashville star Connie Britton volunteered. “I think that’s a really important pursuit of the summer, I’m just saying.”

A series of profit warnings followed. As one fashion editor said: 'Funnily enough, women who buy Mulberry don't want to be thought of as women who spend crazy amounts on bags. So even those who could afford them were put off by the snootier pricing.'

The City has taken a dim view of Hill's departure. The response of Luca Solca, managing director of luxury at investment company Exane BNP Paribas, is typical: 'Mulberry is trying to reposition itself to the high end Mulberry in my view should be cheaper than Burberry and Gucci.

'There is little choice for handbags between $250 and $600. Market results indicate that Mulberry's upmarket ambitions are facing hurdles.'

In other words, Mulberry's price inflation is greed rather than good sense. No one thinks of it in the Prada or Hermes league - its appeal is something else altogether - and many think it unlikely that it ever will.

Mulberry's results today are forecast to see it report a 28 per cent drop in profits. And the share price that once reached $25 now stands at $9.40.

'Warm and fuzzy' are no longer the buzzwords at Mulberry. Let's hope a Parisian snob hasn't killed off the bags of fun.

Edmonton woman Linda Bodo turns e-waste into funky handbags

It takes a certain kind of person to see fashion opportunity in the pile of junk left behind by the cable repair guy.

But Linda Bodo is just that kind of person — one who has spent years not just recycling, but upcycling castoffs into clever, pretty, useful items for the home and garden.

Her latest inspiration comes from electrical waste that remained after her satellite dish was installed. She fiddled with the coaxial cables, splitters and filters, seeing the beginning of interesting handles and hardware for purses.

“I started looking at it and playing around with it and that’s how ReWired came to be,” she says.

Her new line of ReWired purses uses a variety of recycled materials for the body of the bags — laminated banners, unwanted clothing, fabric remnants,Here you can take your pick from a wide selection of wintert-shirts. artificial turf, wine corks, plush toys, dusters, an insulated swimming pool cover.we just have to gaze at catalogs filled with menparkacheap!

It seems no cast-off is too strange to at least be considered by Bodo, the woman who has literally written the book (two books, in fact), on how to reuse and recycle, turning items destined for the Dumpster into nouveau haute-decor.

“The whole e-waste thing has always driven me absolutely crazy,” she says. “Getting a new phone and you’ve got to get a brand-new adapter and a brand-new this, because nothing is ever usable the second time around.”

The leftover bits from the cable industry are particularly bad, she says. “They’re not able to recycle any of these components because it costs too much money to disassemble them and reuse the parts, so they end up getting buried in our landfills.”

Since Bodo began experimenting with e-waste handbags about a year ago, she’s developed a great relationship with Shaw, one of the local cable companies.

“They allow me to go there and Dumpster dive, and when they get a huge stash of stuff they’re going to throw out, they give me a call and I just go down there and amass my materials.”

The rest of the bag components come from a variety of sources: second-hand stores, flea markets, garage sales, donations and friends. The corks in her cork handbag came from “drinking a lot of wine,” she says with a laugh.

“I have a lot of friends collecting for me, so I regularly receive parcels in the mail of wine corks.”

She was getting so many castoffs from friends, she began to run out of space. “My husband was freaking out. But I managed to find ways of repurposing it all.”

Her imagination seems to know no limits. Artificial turf and thrift-store silk flowers become a beautiful “heavy petal” bag. A scrap from an insulated swimming pool cover that looks like heavy-duty bubble wrap becomes a whimsical “bubblicious” bag.

A bright pink, shaggy mop becomes the “cosMOPolitan” bag. A bunch of recalled stuffed kitties become the “kit kat” bag.Kate Bosworth hasn't bought her burberryhandbags yet.

Bodo owned a prop company for many years, designing and creating display props for shopping centres.Like a lot of women,Custom made bicyclesaddles0? “I really had an open mind from doing that already,” she says.

For the past five years, she’s concentrated on her upcycling projects and has written two books on the subject.

Each of her ReWired bags is one-of-a-kind and retails for between $120 and $200, depending on the materials. Bodo has made about 16 handbags so far, along with a cross-body style bag and a messenger-style bag. Plans for a computer bag are in the works.Light up a room in this coachhandbags evening gown.

She’s been working on prototypes throughout the past year and carries one herself regularly. Already, she’s had five strangers like her bag so much, they bought one.

“It’s instantly recognizable, I guess,” she says of the electronic waste used to make the bag.

Tropical Storm Andrea brings flood watches to East Coast

The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season drenched the Southeastern U.S. but caused no major damage on Friday, marching up the East Coast as it brought the threat of weekend flooding as far north as New England.

After bringing rain, strong winds and even tornadoes to Florida, Andrea was losing its tropical characteristics on Friday even as it still packed maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72 kph).

It was blamed for one traffic-related death in Virginia.

Tropical storm warnings remained in effect for North Carolina and southern Virginia, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said at 8 p.m. EDT Friday.

The storm's low-level center was losing definition but remained a threat to the East Coast while "evolving into a low-pressure center," said Darin Figurskey, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Raleigh, N.C.

What was left of the storm center was 75 miles southwest of Ocean City, Md., and moving northeastward at 35 mph.

Forecasters say Andrea could bring high winds, heavy rainfall, and localized coastal flooding through Saturday across the mid-Atlantic states and New England. Rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches were possible along the Eastern Seaboard into coastal Maine, the hurricane center said. Winds near gale force were possible along the coast from the Delmarva Peninsula north to southern New Jersey, as well as coastal Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.

Officials in the Mid-Atlantic region and Northeast were bracing for the storm. New York City activated its flash flooding plan, while flash flood watches were issued for northern Delaware,Choose cheap hermesbags on ourwebsite and save your money for really qualitative and durable fake watches. several Maryland counties, southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and parts of New England.

The weather service reported that small streams and creeks in southeastern Pennsylvania were going over their banks Friday night. New York City's airports were experiencing flight delays, and Connecticut was reporting numerous lane closures on highway as cars spun out amid heavy rain.

The rainy weather washed out events such as NASCAR's Sprint Cup qualifying and the Washington Nationals Friday night home game.

Authorities in Virginia blamed heavy rain from the storm's outer bands for a fatal accident on Interstate 77 in the state's western mountains. William Petty, 57, of Lexington, S.C., died when a car in which he was a passenger hydroplaned while passing a tractor-trailer. He survived the crash, only to be killed moments later when the car was struck by second tractor-trailer, authorities said.

During the morning rush hour in Charleston, S.C., there was little evidence that the center of the storm was passing to the northwest beyond a few downed tree branches, gusty winds and some puddles in the street. The sun occasionally peeked through.

Derrec Becker with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division said the storm brought only a severe thunderstorm Friday. No injuries were reported, and there had been no reports of significant damage.

Mike Sprayberry of North Carolina Emergency Management told the Weather Channel that there had been some flash flooding and local road closures in the state but that "so far we have been quite fortunate."

Thousands of power outages were also reported.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott had warned Thursday of the risk of tornadoes, and officials said that eight were confirmed across the state.

Forecasters didn't expect major problems, however, along the most vulnerable parts of the coast such as North Carolina's Outer Banks, a popular tourist destination.

David Tweedie, 41, of Ocracoke, said an early-morning burst of rain and the forecast of another three hours or so of rain and wind on the Outer Banks island has done little to alter the day's routine for the roughly 1,000 year-round residents.

Authorities in coastal Bertie County, N.C., said a school bus with 32 elementary students on board slid off the road and into a ditch about 8 a.m. No injuries were reported.

A Coast Guard cutter and HC-130 Hercules airplane were called to rescue four adults aboard a 35-foot sailboat about 65 miles off Charleston, S.C. The sailboat's engine was disabled during the storm and left rocking in 15-foot seas and 35-mph winds.

Former British policewoman charged with burglary judged 'too drunk' to intend to steal

A jury has found a former British policewoman not guilty of stealing a mobile phone, after deciding she was too drunk to know what she was doing.

Ceri Ann Rees, 35, had drunk “quite a few” double vodkas at Aspers Casino in Wind Street, Swansea with friends for a colleague’s retirement celebrations in 2011. The trial had previously heard that before arriving at the casino, the group had also been drinking in Swansea’s Pump House,A link to an external website shortwigs, Vest, Coats, Shoes and Bags for Women. Bank Statement and Adelphi bars.

CCTV in the casino building captured Rees entering through a door marked “staff only”, to then rummage through two handbags.

Rees, then a serving officer of the Dyfed Powys police force, was seen returning to the restaurant area with a phone and a charger, which she concealed under the top she was wearing. The phone was retrieved after a colleague removed it from her top and returned it to the staff member.

Following the incident she was arrested and charged with burglary, after entering an area designated solely for staff. She described herself as heavily intoxicated and woke up the next day thinking she was having a nightmare.

Rees, who was off duty during the incident, told the jury yesterday: “I can remember drinking double vodkas in the Bank Statement then waking up under a blanket in a police cell.

“It was my worst nightmare. I couldn’t believe where I was. I rubbed my eyes hoping that if I opened them I’d be somewhere else.”

Rees, who has always maintained that she did not intend to steal the phone, burst into tears when the jury returned their verdict. Swansea Crown Court took just 40 minutes to findOutlet a wide range of hermeskelly at considerable prices. her not guilty.

She was dismissed from her position as a Dyfed Powys Police constable for misconduct two months after the incident.

AMS Fulfillment Plans Annual ‘Steal Deals’ At Warehouse

The store is offering up to 75 percent off its prices, according to company officials.

“When people walk in and start looking around the No. 1 reaction is to take out their cellphone and call their friends,” said Ken Wiseman, CEO of AMS Fulfillment.

The sale takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“These sales are fun for us. We move so much product directly into stores and directly to consumers,Here you can take your pick from a wide selection of stunning heelshoes . but rarely do we have a chance to interface directly with the public,” Wiseman said.

An abundance of different footwear will be on sale. Accessories, jewelry, handbags and purses -- among many other items, will be available, as well.

“A lot of our clients have a product that they were interested in giving some really steal deals on, and so we started doing these warehouse sales,” Wiseman said.

Shoes from Australian designer brands Emu and Ukala will be there. The skateboarding brand C1RCA also will have apparel available.

Other brands offered are Luv Footwear and Closet Candy, among many others.

“These are companies that you’ve seen in retail and now you’re going to get 50-75 percent off prices that you normally would,” Wiseman said.

The building is located on 29010 Commerce Center Drive at Witherspoon Pkwy. The entrance is at the rear of their warehouse building.

“All my staff and staff friends are excited to work it. Oddly, they usually spend more money themselves than they make on the weekend,” Wiseman said.

Yesterday the NFL announced that it has extended its deal with Verizon Wireless for the right to carry games and highlights over mobile phones. Verizon, according to Sports Business Daily, will pay the NFL $1 billion over four years. And for the first time, the carrier will offer live access to CBS (CBS) and Fox (NWS) Sunday afternoon games. The agreement raises the ceiling for mobile video rights, reaffirms the supremacy of the NFL in U.S. sports,So take a glance at five popular captoesandals Parka designs. and, as SBD notes, “obliterate[s] the distinction between sponsor and media-rights deals.” It also seeks to draw a bright line between mobile phones and tablets.

The league, in a bid to protect its broadcast and cable partners, will limit Verizon Wireless to mobile phones and not allow it to stream games to tablets. This puts the NFL in the unenviable position of deciding which is which as wireless devices proliferate in every size, from Biblical scroll to a pack of cigarettes. What about the iPad mini? Or Samsung Electronics’ (005930) 5-inch Galaxy? Or its forthcoming Galaxy Mega 6.3? Or Note 8.0? Or the PadFone from Asustek Computer (2357)? Is a fone a phone?

Work never ends for East Seminole County baseball moms

Drop off. Pick up. Dinner. Laundry. Repeat.

It's the life of baseball moms around the country and around East Seminole County.

In an area such as this one, where youth sports are such an important part of the fabric of the community, it's often lost in the shuffle how important the behind-the-scenes work done by parents is.

It's not unique to any one sport or mother, specifically, but today I want to talk about baseball moms.

Take Helen Morrissey of Oviedo,2013 Collection germanarmyuniforms 1672 Styles. for instance.Shop the latest backpackfactory on the world's largest fashion . Everyday, she makes sure four of her five sons,You may see many other fake websites posting available cheaprolexwatches, be aware of fake retailers. who are all on their age-respective all-star teams for Oviedo Babe Ruth, are at their respective practice fields - on time, with clean uniforms and their equipment properly packed in their bags.

Fortunately for Helen Morrissey, her fifth and oldest son, Dylan Morrissey, just graduated from Trinity Prep, where he played at the prep level, and is old enough to drive himself around; he even helps with some of the pick-up and drop-off duties. Dylan will also play collegiately at Gordon College next spring.

With weather here in Central Florida that lends itself to year-round, outdoor sports, it's a seemingly endless cycle for parents and moms like Helen Morrissey - one mostly done out of love for one's kids.

"They love it so much that I don't mind doing it at all," Helen Morrissey said, referencing her daily duties that mirror the duties of so many other parents in the area.

So often,With the Bari Jay collection you'll be able to wear your monclerjackets again! people just think of youth sports in terms of the kids out there on the field, the finish product. There's also the dads out there coaching and giving their time. Just don't forget that those uniforms the kids are wearing, temporarily clean, at least until the game starts, that there's someone who is going to have to clean those once they're caked in dirt.Perfect winter and summer suprashoesforgirls to suit every style and occasion.

Just ask Helen Morrissey's husband, Mike Morrissey.

"Nobody ever sees that part of the story " they just see the kids all show up at the field with their bags and their uniforms and they're on time and they're organized," said Mike Morrissey, who, like many local dads, helps out coaching his kids' teams.

The funny thing is, in so many situations, there are baseball moms who weren't even baseball fans, originally. Helen Morrissey is from Scotland, loves soccer and said baseball was "foreign" to her when she got to this country.

She, like plenty of moms who didn't like baseball before getting married and having boys who were obsessed with it, learned to love the game because she loves her kids.

"I got to love it and sit with the other mothers," Helen Morrissey said. "Just hanging out at the field all day - we all have so much fun."

Again, this applies to all sports and to both mothers and fathers. It is, in some cases, a job that may go thankless until one's kids are old enough to be hauling their own kids around from practice to practice.

So next time you're at a youth baseball game, just remember, the next time you see a kid called safe after sliding into second base for a stolen base, as the rest of the crowd cheers there just might be one parent half-cheering, half-cringing - wondering how he or she is going to get that stain out.

District Throws In Towel on School Uniforms, Largely Relaxing Policy For Simplicity’s Sake

The Flagler County School Board won’t say so explicitly, but it’s saying it by policy. The board is largely conceding defeat on the dress code policy (or “school uniform” policy,Has anyone brought a beadsfactory?‎ as parents and students misunderstood it) crafted amid much controversy last year. This evening, the board will quietly approve revisions to that policy that vastly relax it, especially for high school students who, in many respects, will be able to return to the sort of clothing they wore before the stricter policy was in place.

Specific color restrictions will be gone, as long as students wear solid colors, so there will be no more agonizing debates about blue-looking or pink-looking shirts that did not quite fit the policy. There’s more flexibility with pants, too. There are a couple of new restrictions—no sheer –type or lace shirts—but those are outweighed by the changes in students’ favor. Even restrictions on “outerwear,” including sweatshirts, will be gone, as long as the clothing is “school appropriate,” whatever that may mean.

The “whatever” was of concern to the board attorney and some board members, but its determination will be left in the hands of each school’s disciplinary committee member. For middle and elementary school students, the stricter rules are still in place, though they haven’t been as much of an issue as they had been in the two high schools.

“To really make it short for you,” Katrina Townsend, the district’s director of student services told the school board at a meeting late last month, summing up a committee’s work on the matter,Custom made cheapreplicawatches? “the exact quote from the final meeting on this was, we either need to be more like a uniform, which means you literally will be able to walk into Matanzas and they’ll all be in Matanzas blue and khaki, or we need to not have to have some of these conversations.”

Board member John Fischer, who had pushed for the strict policy, was dismayed by the changes. “There’s too much broadness there, you’re opening it up to pretty much anything,” John Fischer said.Great handbags and replicalouisvuitton for men and women! Even his proposal to do away with “Spirit Day,” a sort of school version of dress-down Friday, was cast aside.

“I’m on board with the clarity,” Andy Dance, the school board chairman, said. “I don’t think it does any good if we can’t enforce it, if we’re spending too much time, a disproportionate amount of time, on some of the little things. Then those are what we should be cleaning up.Find the perfect rolexshop photos and be inspired for your I don’t know what we will be getting into with this definition. I guess it’s another phase in the development of this policy”

Members of the disciplinary committee who work in each school will also have the authority to make day-to-day determinations about what is and what isn’t appropriate. That will eliminate a great deal of back-and-forth emails between schools and the central office, and the time wasting that goes along with it.Atria gemstonebeads are set apart from the rest because of their sleek sultry styles. Committee members told the school board that the dress code has changed the culture for the better. They’re not for repealing it, but for making it more realistic—and less of an enforcement hassle.

When the board tried to justify imposing a new, stricter dress code last year, it did so with little to no evidence that such a policy would make a difference academically or in other ways in schools. That evidence just doesn’t exist, except anecdotally, and often prejudicially: educators who think a strict dress code makes a difference will say so, citing their experience. Educators who think it makes no difference will cite their own experience to that effect.

Still, one of the recurring bits of evidence the Flagler school board seized on, especially after its visit there, was Seminole County’s experience with uniforms. Once implemented there, standardized test scores happen to have gone up, at least for a while. It could very well have been a coincidence. FCAT scores go up some years, down others, and in recent years—the years Seminole pointed to—they were on an upward trend. With that in hand, and a general sense that uniforms could make a difference, Flagler went that route.

It did not impose a strict uniform so much as tighten its existing dress code by limiting what students could wear, and citing what they could not.

Nearly Three Months Later, Austin Still Adjusting to Plastic Bag Ban

Though Austin’s ban on plastic bags took effect March 1, the conversation about how consumers are coping is still going strong.

Austinites have been sounding off on social media about the benefits and inconveniences of banning plastic bags. One particularly in-depth conflict has erupted on an Austin Reddit thread, asking “How has Austin’s bag ban affected you?”

Numerous Redditors shared their views on how the ban has impacted their lives. Here’s a look at some of the most common themes that emerged:

Shopping has become more efficient: The inconvenience of bags has prompted shoppers to begin planning their trips more in advance so that their purchases don’t get out of hand.2013 Collection germanarmyuniforms 1672 Styles. “I now pre-emptively decline a bag and only purchase what I can comfortably carry in my hands,” Redditor nelsnelson writes. “This means that my meals are rarely made up of more than a literal handful of ingredients. It has made everything simpler.”

Plastic bags were convenient in the household: Many Austinites adapted to utilizing excess plastic bags in the household - those places where reusable bags just won't cut it. "“You obviously don't have to deal with poop,” argues Redditor austex_mike, “I need plastic bags for diapers.” User nuovo_donna is also struggling with life without free plastic bags: “I'm almost out of little liner bags for all of my wastebaskets, and I'll have to start buying plastic bags soon."

People are doing shopping outside city limits: People who live on the edges of Austin prefer not to deal with the inconvenience. Instead, suburb-dwellers find themselves making a large amount of purchases at stores beyond the city limits. Aforementioned user austex_mike concedes, “I'll be honest. Nothing beats the convenience of just using old grocery bags. I live in north Austin, so I just swing over to the Greenlawn HEB in Round Rock every now and then and do a big shopping trip.”

Some are calling for more measures: Those in favor of a full environmental makeover for the city of Austin think this is a step in the right direction. Redditor prophetjohn writes,Like a lot of women,Custom made bicyclesaddles0? “Pretty sure in the early stages, this is going to be a net negative. My hope is that it will promote a more reusable mindset that propagates beyond just plastic bags.”

Complaints to cashiers are off the charts: “Worst part is that they take it out on me,” former HEB employee and Reddit user Hyperdude reports. Current cashier Terramoura agrees: “In my opinion, if you are angry about the ban, you should complain to the city. I like the ban.Jovani designer prom dresses and celebrity style lacebodystockings for prom. Plastic is such a nuisance. Vertical stripes will elongate your figure which can be flattering for petite women. Avoid clothing types with large prints although small prints are a creative way of adding style and color to any look. Getting tight fitting clothes is a standard style rule for petite women who are always trying to avoid feeling like their figure is swamped out by their clothes. Avoid garments that have a lot of design ease because all that extra fabric adds bulk and make you look heavier.

If you want to wear a belt, match them to your outfit and keep belts slim. Wide or contrasting belt will cut your figure in half and break up the vertical illusion that we want to achieve to look longer and slim.

What We Can Learn From Mel Brooks About Racism

“Blazing Saddles” is generally regarded as Mel Brooks’s best movie: It was ranked sixth on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest American comedies and it was nominated for three Academy Awards. “Best,” though, is a relative term. Brooks’s Borscht Belt-meets-absurdism style is so unique and so indelible that what we call the “best” is usually the first of his movies we fell in love with.

It’s safer to say that “Blazing Saddles” was Brooks’s most timely movie, even his most serious movie. And it’s as safe to say that there wouldn’t be a Mel Brooks installment of PBS’s “American Masters” (premiering May 20; check local listings) without “Blazing Saddles.”

The opening scene is terrific and justifiably famous. We see a mix of Chinese and black workers pounding hammers under the desert sun. Their vicious and idiotic white overseers demand they sing spirituals like they did when they were slaves. The workers huddle, break apart, and slowly we hear a sweet, beautiful voice: “I get no kick from champagne.” Almost before we can process the joke, Brooks lays a second one atop the first: the black workers join in, harmonizing with the lead singer. This isn’t one person singing Cole Porter; this is a full, sophisticated a cappella routine. Brooks continues to add inversion after inversion, but the jokes work because the first few bars of that unexpected, anachronistic song say so much about racial ignorance.Discover suits with ASOS.Wonderful Gucci handbags collection: beachweddingdresses and discount Gucci handbags by Styledrops.

Coming less than a decade after the Civil Rights Act, “Blazing Saddles” exploded white Americans’ fears of integration and affirmative action. (Just before the climax, we see a poster reading “Help Wanted: Heartless Villains For Destruction of Rock Ridge, $100 Per Day, Criminal RecAll saxobankcycling and accessories are made with the same authentic materials as the originals.ord Required, Hedley Lamarr, Equal Opportunity Employer.Work a crowd in this evening gown from germanuniforms.”) The brilliance of “Blazing Saddles” is that you can watch it dozens of times, that you can laugh again and again at the sex jokes, at the sublime silliness, and even at the jokes about racial stereotypes without pausing to think about the underlying premise long enough to call it by its malicious name. Hedley Lamarr’s initial scheme boils down to this: If you put a black person in a prominent municipal position, everyone in the town will leave. “Blazing Saddles” is the funniest movie ever made about “white flight,” which is probably why it continues to make so many people uncomfortable.

But once we decide that the comedy in “Blazing Saddles” is serious, does that mean we have to take everything in the movie seriously? How are we supposed to view the elaborate ending? How are we supposed to understand the fantastically intricate way that Brooks pulled back the camera and broke the frame?

First, we have to remember the context. “Blazing Saddles” was released in 1974, during the heyday of American postmodernism. Thomas Pynchon only just won the National Book Award for “Gravity’s Rainbow.” John Barth’s “Chimera” was another recent winner. If we think about the ending within that context, it looks like a normal postmodern setup.

The ending only becomes more antic and more intricate. Hedley Lamarr leaves the soundstage and goes to the Chinese Theater to watch the premiere of “Blazing Saddles.” He watches the good guys coming for him and it causes him to try to flee. Watching the movie is part of watching the movie. (It’s a joke Brooks loved so much that he used it again in “Spaceballs.”) We go back and forth from the movie to the set to the movie. With the Bari Jay collection you'll be able to wear your monclerjackets again! Some characters act like actors playing characters. Some characters never drop the act. Is this comic or is it only silly? Is this postmodern or a joke on postmodernism?

We can’t answer the question because Brooks can’t answer the question. The ending of “Blazing Saddles” is a grand-though-hilarious failure because we’re never sure where the set-up ends and the joke begins. Parody had become inseparable from the thing itself.

Perhaps what Brooks was saying with the end of “Blazing Saddles” is that culture had become too anarchic to parody. There were no rules that artists had to follow. We would accept it all as serious art and Brooks approved. The end of “Blazing Saddles” calls back to the end of the Marx Brothers’ “Duck Soup.” In that surreal, anarchic ending, during Freedonia’s war against the Sylvanians, Groucho’s uniform constantly changes. One minute he’s in revolutionary war garb and everyone else is dressed like World War I soldiers; the next, Groucho is wearing a civil war infantry hat, then a confederate cavalry uniform. It’s a beautifully nonsensical statement of pacifism: war never ends, we only change costumes.

The movie reminds us that historical change is an illusion. We’re still genocidal, still racist. But perhaps we can use humor to get us to think differently. The end of “Blazing Saddles” isn’t an uncanny moment when Brooks’s parody echoes “serious” culture. The end of “Blazing Saddles” is a statement about how serious comedy has always been. It’s a reminder that much of what we sometimes call aesthetic experimentation came from screen comedies, from absurdist novels and films, from the need to push the comic envelope, to find new jokes. The ends is a proclamation about comedy and about postmodernism: Now we are all Marx Brothers.
