75 Jahre PET – Siegeszug als Flaschenmaterial

Der Kunststoff Polyethylenterephthalat oder kurz PET feiert in diesem Jahr seinen 75. Geburtstag. Ursprünglich als Alternative zur Herstellung von Textilfasern entwickelt, ist das Material heute eines der wichtigsten in der Verpackungs- und Textilindustrie. Sein weltweiter Siegeszug begann zwar erst Anfang der 1970er-Jahre, dafür hält er aber bis heute an: PET-Fasern werden unter anderem bei der Herstellung von reißfesten Bekleidungs- und Geotextilien verwendet. Flaschen aus PET haben mit zahlreichen Vorteilen die Konsumentennachfrage und damit den Getränkemarkt nachhaltig geprägt und werden immer häufiger zum Abfüllen verwendet. Dickson schrieben 1941 Geschichte, als sie in der Kleinstadt Accrington im Norden Großbritanniens erstmals den formbaren Stoff Polyethylenterephthalat herstellten. In ihrem Experiment produzierten sie ein Polyester aus Ethylenglykol und Terephthalsäure, das hohe Schmelztemperaturen aufwies. Anfänglich sollte das Material zur Herstellung robuster und günstiger Textilfasern dienen, um diese als Alternative zu japanischer Seide und Nylon einsetzen zu können. Früher wurde der Wertstoff zu 100 Prozent aus Erdöl oder Erdgas hergestellt, heute gibt es bereits erste Flaschen auf biobasierter Rohstoffbasis. Siegeszug im Flaschenformat Weltweite Bekanntheit erlangte PET durch den Einsatz bei der Produktion von Getränkeflaschen. Anfang der 1970er Jahre kamen die ersten PET-Flaschen in den USA großflächig auf den Markt. Vor allem Hersteller von Softdrinks nutzten das Material zur Abfüllung ihrer Produkte und läuteten damit den Siegeszug des Wertstoffs ein. Im Gegensatz zu herkömmlichen Glasflaschen bietet PET Bruchsicherheit, ein geringeres Gewicht sowie ein einfacheres Handling. Mehr als 97 Prozent der Einweg-PET-Pfandflaschen gehen in Deutschland laut einer aktuellen Umfrage der Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung im Auftrag des Forum PET zurück ins Recycling. Der Rest wird energetisch verwertet. Rund ein Drittel des Rezyklats wiederum wird zur Produktion neuer Einweg-PET-Flaschen verwendet. In anderen Anwendungsbereichen wie zum Beispiel der Textilbranche substituiert recyceltes PET zudem den Einsatz von neuem PET. Als Verpackungsmaterial für Lebensmittel und Getränke erfüllt das Material strenge gesetzliche Kriterien. Bei der Produktion von PET werden zum Beispiel keine Weichmacher wie Bisphenol A (BPA) eingesetzt. Sogar Babynahrung darf daher in PET verpackt werden. Die PET-Branche optimiert die Flaschen bis heute kontinuierlich – zum Beispiel im Hinblick auf ihr Gewicht. Moderne 1,5 Liter-Lightweight-Flaschen für Mineralwasser aus PET erreichen heute ein Gewicht von unter 30 Gramm. Jedes Jahr kommen rund 17 Milliarden PET-Flaschen auf den Markt, Tendenz steigend.
