Sein weltweiter Siegeszug begann zwar erst Anfang der 1970er-Jahre, dafür hält er aber bis heute an: PET-Fasern werden unter anderem bei der Herstellung von reißfesten Bekleidungs- und Geotextilien verwendet. Flaschen aus PET haben mit zahlreichen Vorteilen die Konsumentennachfrage und damit den Getränkemarkt nachhaltig geprägt und werden immer häufiger zum Abfüllen verwendet. Der Rest wird energetisch verwertet. Rund ein Drittel des Rezyklats wiederum wird zur Produktion neuer Einweg-PET-Flaschen verwendet. In anderen Anwendungsbereichen wie zum Beispiel der Textilbranche substituiert recyceltes PET zudem den Einsatz von neuem PET. Als Verpackungsmaterial für Lebensmittel und Getränke erfüllt das Material strenge gesetzliche Kriterien. Bei der Produktion von PET werden zum Beispiel keine Weichmacher wie Bisphenol A (BPA) eingesetzt. Sogar Babynahrung darf daher in PET verpackt werden. Die PET-Branche optimiert die Flaschen bis heute kontinuierlich – zum Beispiel im Hinblick auf ihr Gewicht.
